Spin off from the other thread ... it would be interesting to hear how each of us arrived in the sport.

I was introduced at a young age by my mum & dad who both dinghy sailed ...

You?

A friend of my brother didn't want to crew in his dad's Firefly any more, so got him to go down and sail with the dad. I went along for the ride, and got a job crewing someone else. That was in 1975, and even though I sail other boats more, I still think of myself primarily as a Firefly sailor. First impressions are very strong.

I went out Sonata racing a couple of times with my dad when I was younger which I enjoyed. He bought me a Laser Pico and taught me to sail properly, I joined Sea Scouts and from then onwards I was hooked on sailing!

Started with school in 1971, when I was 7. Found the school experience too structured, so I started cycling 6 miles to the club at weekends and hanging around. Eventually started crewing, then got an old Cadet when I was about 11. Been sailing ever since.

mum and dad. There's pictures of me on their enterbox, on the water, age 2. Then I got into Swallows and Amazons, and they bought me a Mirror. No going back

my dad gave up playing rugby and needed a new sport to do so when I was 7 I was introduced to a blue mirror and we all learnt together. Without lessons too. Had to share the crewing with my two brothers so didn't get out enough. Eventually used sailing as a great excuse to get out of having to go to salvation army Sunday school which my mum had forced me into at a young age. Thank goodness for sailing, saved me from the hell that is religion

Family folklore says that golf-widow Mum issued an ultimatum and the end result was a tired old amateur built GP. Short step from there to crewing Cadets and the rest is history.
