I'm not in the market for a single hander, but will be up at Yorkshire Dales for a 200 open this weekend.
I wouldn't want to stop a perspective customer having a demo, but would be quite interested in seeing whether the boat lives up to the forum hype.
If it's OK I may try and cadge an ad hoc ride in one, subject to demos still being available after racing, the queue not being too long and the missus not asking what on earth I want to trial a single hander for!

Thanks for the warning Jack. I know of other fishery related shenanigans there that was less than appealing. Windsurfing was effectively banned at one point over a shore-side spat. Pathetic. However I also know a few of the visiting D-One sailors who say Oxford has been an amazing base camp, so I guess I'll just take it as I find it.
In fairness to Draycote, the rescue cover is second to none, it's a very benign place to sail that is perfect in that respect and more than justifies the membership charges imho. If I was still sailing a Solo I would have re-joined no question. And the Laser fleet is pretty impressive by most standards, a nice bunch of guys with a healthy attitude to the racing that defies the laser banana muncher stereotype. I'd heard there have been issues with the fisheries staff, there was a big argy bargy with the windsurfers not long back some little hitler jobsworth going for a total ban because they went a bit too fast and scared the fish murderers. It's nothing the threat of the introduction of a half decent high strength pesticide to the water if they don't act in a professional or conciliatory manner quietly whispered in the appropriate ear shouldn't cure. No fish = no job. Edited by iGRF - 09 Jun 14 at 11:30am |

just make sure you don't leave your boat on the yellow cross hatched marks on the causeway, as your opinion of the club will significantly be reduced after the bombardment of abuse you will get from the Fisheries Staff! Oh and if you fall in don't expect the level of rescue cover you appreciate at Draycote. You will more likely end up being rescued by another sailing dinghy than a rib, as happened to my young son.

It's less than an hour.... which is my cut off for club racing. One of the reasons I could no longer maintain a membership at a Cotswold club, 50 minutes on a good run, over two hours with Sunday Fosse Way drivers and the crawl through Cirencester, Moreton and Stow... just not do-able.
The other reason is that we expect the winter membership scheme to attract a couple, if not 3 more too, so a mini-fleet racing against the active handicap fleet of 'similar' paced boats. None of that 49er vs Tera on separate starts stuff like some other clubs in the area. I personally would have also considered Boddington, it seems like a nice active club that would be a smidgeon closer, however that would be less likely to attract the guys who are travelling for the winter series, therefore it makes sense to try and form a small unit within the racing at Oxford. |

You're better man than me James. I wouldn't sail regularly if I had to travel that far. I like my club local, that way I get to sail more.
