Sorry, missed that earlier - too busy writing my report above. Adrian's gooseneck issue was down to his rig being a very early prototype. I would challenge anyone to try and break the production gooseneck which is loosely based on the Finn system. Andy's broken mast is a different story which is very certainly a problem in production and, fortunately for us, not a design issue. As for Tim's drysuit I accept no responsibilty for his self inflicted family planning. Rodney Edited by rodney |

That would be Peter from the Czech Republic who looks after all of Devoti Sailing's media - videos etc. Look after the keyring, they are very rare and not easily come by Rodney |

bloody mary......it took me more than flying to san fran to get to london from valencia, planes where delayed and while waiting i was asking myself if i had not lost the plot , it was even cold in valencia.....got there late friday night finally and went to bed after a couple of proper beers...still do not know which country makes the best beers the uk or czech repubblic...there you go, surely it is not italy.9 clock in the morning me and peter ceha , our video guy that will make sure that all major d one event will have good coverage , and by the way was this year second at the worlds of human beatboxing....did not know what it was until he started sounding like a rap group in the car, took off to queen mary...got there and until i was down in the parking lot it was looking even more unreal than i ever thought it could be , all covered in snow, really nice volonteers keeping te parking proper....hopped up the stairs and the chilly wind hit me....not really different that what i used to train in on lake garda in winter ....but that was a few years ago.now i was happy to get my first coffee at the club.rodney told me that only three d one could make it , two more where snowed down and no way to get them there. met with tim garvin and was very happy , a real passionate sailor , a nice person, the type of guy that fits perfectly the idea of different sailing events that we want to run....andy rice was there putting his boat toghether and adrian the man was grumbilg, just having come back from a long holiday in a sunny spot with his misses ,he was also asking himself if it was all true.at twelve regardless of the wether the race started....a lonely topper was leading fo a bit....than the d one started , despite only having three on the starting line it was kind of mooving for me to see them sailing , big shifts and they came tacking towards the club house where i was cowardly hiding. there where some really beatiful boats out there , the 505 was sailing superbly, a red wooden merlin rocket that got me to feel like i wanted one to go sailing with my daughter viola, some beatiful foiling moths....some very sophisticated phantoms with really nice all carbon rudderstocks....looking at my d ones i was wondering why they where all sailing with the main traveller so open downwind....found out after the race that the control lines for the main traveller had frozen and it was nearly impossible to trim the traveller car....was a bit sad when the glorious d one troups surrended , but could only go down the ramp and help them getting their boats out, had a look at the first broken mast in the d one short history and thought that while inserting the stainless steel locating pin on the mast joint laminate got damaged and that led to the breakage.....peter took pics and they are already in hand of souther spars to make sure we do have that problem any more....all in all met a lot of incredibly passionate sailors and really nice people , and will come again to the uk....if i manage to loose some weight to sail myself , it is a lot of fun. can only say thank you to queen mary sailing club , despite being the lower attendence in decades due to the weather we will be there next year with more boats hoping in a milder day....and that they where right to get the race going.....now i am back in valencia , the cup is about to get going and sailing will be at the focus of media attention....but the guys down here are not the real sailors , they are just at present a poor show of what sailing should be , the real sailors are the ones that had the balls to take their dinghies out and sail at queen mary, their passion and love for sailing was really like mine....much better mixing with sailors there than down here with poshy ac rock stars ....thanks to all you and see you at the next event ,luca devoti |

Luca if its any help i was next to Andy about 15 yeards away when the mast snapped. He was really motoring and the mast was quite inverted, although there was little mainsheet tension. Unfortunately with it being so shifty we got hit by a massive gust and andy flogged the kite very heavily 3 or four times and the mast just folded. I guess this with the fault in the layup was the cause. For what its worth, my opinion of the D-one, both in terms of looks and speed has completely changed. It looked like hard work for the D-one'rs out tere, i am guessing through a lack of time in the boat. They were capsizing as much as i was out there! If i could afford one i would buy one! |

It looks like Luca (in the blue hat) is wondering what he is doing there - the wind chill factor must be -15 or more. Meanwhile Rodney is putting the numbers on Andy's sail before the glue freezes and wondering why he forgot his gloves. De-rigging was much more interesting with every knot and even the wings pins frozen solid. Instead of the usual 20 minutes to de-rig it took best part of an hour on Saturday.

Rodney, Luca, Sorry I didn't manage to find you to say hello while I was there, I'd have liked to have said hello. Will you be anywhere else over the winter, would be interested in having a go, they do look like fun. Phil |

Thanks Graham, We and the whole team thoroughly enjoyed the day. Luca was really amazed at the passion, determination and skill of the UK sailors. My counterpart in Holland didn't believe that the race went ahead and that so many competed until I sent the pictures. They seem to be busy ice yachting there now - 100 Kph Will we see you at the Battle of the Classes? Edited by rodney |
