Seems a bit harsh to martyr the good folk of Tonbridge Wells who may be quite happy to fork out an extra pound a week to carry on sailing at their favourite and nearest lake.

Look, this is a very big topic which embraces modern society. It is like charities. There are some husky guys in the middle of Buxton selling raffle tickets or something for a charity called Army Angels. Ever heard of them? I have not. So, get worried about ill treated mongoose or disabled soldiers or three legged horses. The public share my concern and give me money, thank you very much, but as more money comes in I cannot cope so I need a finance director, and a good one at that, so I have to pay the going rate. Then I need an accountant and back office staff. Next I pay a company to employ door to door collectors...and so on. Pretty soon there is a huge organisation paying many wages but the original purpose of the charity is lost. I get paid for cleaning because that gets it done but is this the slippery slope?

RYA involvment/training. In the old days punters saw a bit of sailing and were helped to have a go. They had enthusiasim before they started. Now we have to train them but how many continue?

As I said further up, a new club would almost certainly struggle. It wouldn't have 960 members, not initially. They'd be lucky to get 100 members in their first year, I would have thought. And even to get there you need a dedicated band of volunteers who need to be careful to foster a good culture- else they'll hit five years, find no-one wants to take over running and burn out.

I think you'll find within a year or so an exclusive development of luxury lakeside apartments springing up with a country club at the heart. They may be water sports but it will be along a commercial line run from the country club.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

A pound a week?!?! (Shakes fist in anger at such an extortionate consideration!!). Where am I supposed to find that.... I've only just upgraded the Sky to HD, there's been a price hike by 20p per bag of chips down the fryer and SWMBO has just ordered Kettle Chips on BOGOF from Ocado rather than gone to Aldi like we agreed....

People make clubs. Our reservoir has been there since about 1800 and the club was formed in 1950. I have been a member for 20 years. So many friends, so much friendly competition, so much organised chaos. If I wanted to belong to a motorway service station with lake attached then I would.

Is it wrong that I like the sound of that?

Absolutely - and should my committee turn around to us and say 'look guys we need £4 a week from family members and £2 a week from individual members or this place shuts', then I know I wouldn't abandon them for a cheaper option down the road. I guess that level of loyalty simply wasn't engendered amongst their membership.
