Back on topic, the shackle draggers have a bit of history taking one designs and improving them for their own market...

Australian version...



They took Uffa's Jollyboat and did something similar (Well at least I think they improved upon it)

I've often thought, especially in this day of groovy singlehanders if someone were to take the mould of a finn and build a lightweight version of it, put a RS100 rig on, flog it for £7000 instead of £17000 would it be a better boat?

I've also thought about that, and drawn a similar conclusion to another forumite.... just ask Rodders for a quote on a D-One without all that gubbins upfront.  A modern finn, easier to sail thanks to a superior righting moment, no stays so you can sail by the lee... mmm sweet ride made even sweeter because it's out of class and you could beg Jim n' Taxi to cut you a couple of rags for it... one for lightwind and one for dogs off chains.

It "might" be a faster boat (in marginal planing, anyway), it would be easier to lift onto a car roof, but it would be less stable, twitchier, carry its way less well, fall over when left and not be sitting on its design waterline.

So, some boats might be better lighter, others might just become a nasty boat to sail.

After all, how many on here were surprised how hard the 100 was to handle compared to the heavier prototype?

it wasn't so much the handling I struggled with when sailing (although others did, they couldn't get back into it if they fell overboard!) but it was a PITA when it capsized on the 10 second dash to get your trolley... even in no wind.  

It certainly didn't benefit from being lighted-up in my opinion.  If anything I thought the prototype was better upwind... more momentum to drive it.

Well said Rupert. All boat design is a compromise, so whether this or that "improvement" is really better is a matter of opinion.

That said, I guess all of us would prefer stiff to soggy (no innuendo), but even there, now I think about it, someone might prefer the maybe more forgiving feel of a soggy hull. I certainly preferred sailing the slack-rigging Snipes of the 70’s to the tightly-rigged boats of today; there was just something unique about them.

If the weather is right and BBQ is lit, can you beat dry capsizing a soggy old Topper on a warm-winded beach somewhere bucolic?  

Great sailing isn't about just the boat, it's about the environment we interact with.  If it were just about human technological endeavour, then a green-energy powerboat would be the weapon of choice, personally I couldn't think of a boat I'd rather own less... well I guess I could, a less-than-green stink-boat, or a jet ski.

Had this conversation as I risked a hernia on sunday helping a Contender sailor recover his boat, you can always add weight if you want, it's getting rid of it that's the problem, in all sectors of life.

I really enjoyed sailing the Aero the other day, but I still wonder whether there won't be any "old" ones around in a decade or 2, like there are Lasers, as they are built too light. I hope there are, I can see me sailing one in my 60's!
