Surely that's the story of the Rogue experiment James - concept derailed by execution issues

yes- pretty much, if we look at the hardware. Although after a suitable break from dinghies it gave me enough time and space to realise that it was ultimately a flawed concept for me anyway. I enjoy racing. I'm not very good at it, but I still enjoy it and the only real way to achieve that type of racing I particularly like, is to do it in like for like boats. If I just want to blat about, then frankly windsurfing is far superior (he says having never sailed a Moth

Well I have been down at Porthpean today helping someone with a Supernova and the bay is a mass of white tops owing to a gale force south westerly. Clive, Fowey wouldn't be a good place to sail today either as the wind would be blowing straight through the river mouth. You would be living on a knife edge trying to beat down the river in today’s conditions. Yes the Porthpean hill is a real bummer, which is one of the reasons a lightweight Tasar is an ideal boat to sail there as it makes pulling up the hill that much less of an effort. Mind you I don’t think there is an ideal sailing club anywhere. They all have some sort of challenge to overcome. Reservoirs may have easier launching and flatter water, but sailing in their restrictive waters can only be enjoyable for so long. Some sea side clubs are quite a distance from a car park, and most of them have to be fairly high up to be out of the reach of high tides. We have no choice of leaving the boats nearer the beach. However the view from our Clubhouse over St. Austell Bay is one of the finest in the country on a nice day. In fact where is the ideal sailing club in the |

Ideal, not quite, but Restronguet comes close. For an inland club Northampton is excellent. But, as you say, nowhere will be totally perfect. |

Was being a bit tongue in cheek. I only meant Fowey for actually getting launched. I totally accept what came after would be 'orrible until you cleared the harbour mouth at least, after which today I suspect it would be rather adrenaline filled. Ideal club: well if you could move the whole Carnac package to somewhere close by, that would do me

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Shoreham: Launch into the harbour at any state of the tide. 10 min sail to the REAL English Channel waves. Car park right next to the club. Grassy lawn to rig & relax on. What more could we want? ![]() Edit: Forgot - CLASS racing as well as the Handicap fleet. Edited by Noah - 18 Apr 13 at 1:41pm |

Good question. I can think of a few that aren't ideal although I wouldn't name them on a forum.....mmm what would I look for in a club. ....what makes an ideal club?

location wise... inlet or harbour into a big sea area one way and a sheltered area the other. salt content to maximise kirby torch downwind performance.
racing wise... a mix of dinghies fleet racing, sportsboat fleet racing and cruiser handicaps. Multiple course formats inc w/l, rtc and trapezoids. infrastructure wise... professional staff, no duties. Rescue cover during scheduled race and organised sailing times. Good food, good beer, camping on site and a good taxi service to somewhere with a bit of nightlife. cost wise... £600 per year per person for full adults (same as an average gym membership), concessions for students, OAPs and under 18s. Crew memberships for non-boat owners. Opportunities to join 'work crews' supporting professional staff for pro-rata reimbursements against the membership fees. |
