It get addictive and spoils you for many other boats though ! It sounds like you might be finding the 'extra gear' in the box there ... it does not feel it sometimes as it is so quiet and 'non-splashy' but when you look around you start to realise what is really happening. Are you using the 'dangle' pole much yet ? Mike L. PS - No I was not out in '03' this weekend, despite the sun etc - a few of us are preparing for a Nationals in the Blaze next weekend but I did see CA secretary Mike Bell and Charlotte out on Sunday. |

Yep, dangly pole takes some learning and playing. However despite your convictions to the contrary you can't sail the boat at sea, in waves without jib cleating.

Indeed we were out in '04' yesterday, but on a small pond with light shifty winds coming over the trees. Oh for "12kts, flat sea and 18C".......
SF - I agree with your comments on jib cleats. I fitted this 'proof of concept' before doing the Isle of Sheppey race last year: (& at 5.5h I was looking for the main sheet cleat.......!!)  You need to jam the sheet in with a foot, but it releases with a straight pull. The cleats would ideally need to be angled backwards by about 20 deg. You'll notice my jib sheet tracks are across the boat as opposed to the production boats which are along, so that could alter the ideal position of the cleat. It could be argued that with the dangle pole there's actually no need for a track? It would fit with Icon's 'simplistic' philosophy.
I measured '04' yesterday: Mast rake - 7110mm to top of rudder post Tension - 130Kg (if I've read the Loos correctly) Dunno if these are optimum, but Mike L sailed the boat the other week & seemed to think all was ok, so they're probably a good starter for 10. Mike. |

Cannot understand your comment about 'us' not having cleats - we have had jib cleats on 03 since the beginning ..... We just find it faster to use them but seldom ! Turn on the ratchets and get the crew earning their beer .. or whatever .... They could be playing the dangle pole in unison as well. Our cleats are also located for 'cross sheeting' on the opposite sides of the boat like some Nat12's ... how else would I be able to single-hand an Icon (which I do occasionally as a 'party piece' on light wind days) ?! They have also been permitted in either location from the beginning. I did try Mike Bells's boat recently to see the 'central' option on the water. Works well and then gave feedback to Devoti who then sent a 'carbon' (i.e. 'pimped') one over - it then went with Icon 15 to a new owner .. who insisted ! When we order hulls for customers we can specifiy exactly what is wanted - the only thing we have rejected from Devoti was on recent boats has been a few rope choices ..... including some supplied for mainsheets in a 'disturbing' shade of green - now changed for a more acceptable choice ! Not quite 12 knots, but close when the sea breeze set in. I am also trying out central cleat positions and I was puzzled by Mike Bell's arrangement covering up part of the centre board slot until I realized that the board is probably still 100% within the case in the position shown in the photo. I think I can therefore make a useful adjustment. Probably ought to do this before our "long distance" race next week or there may be complaints. Peter 06 |

Yes, the board's fully up in that photo. The centerboard casing in the original 'UK' batch is longer than necessary which is what this is covering. Let us know how you manage to mount the cleats & how you get on in your epic race. Mike. |

We're using the ratchet as supplied on the jib sheets but fitted with cleats and very stiff tubing as an aid to stand up. Not ideal ,but simple and cluttered, refining the angle should make it easier to uncleat. I've been crewing recently and it is OK, See what the proppa crew thinks tomorrow night.
If it is breezy try a 3:1 mainsheet (use longer rope but thinner, so it runs easily) rather than a cleat. It works, but you lose some sensitivity on the reaches. We use 2:1 up to 12kts and 3:1 for windier than that.... but then I'm very old!!!!!! Bigger rig tension seems good in anything over 8/10kts Haven't checked the rake recently, but set to very slightly more than Mike reccomended, but seems good and the helm only loads up when the boat heels .... so keep the b****r flat. SF
