Y
es it might be .... at BSC we run a Wednesday evening series - personal handicap and revised each week with big fleets - typically 50-70 boats.  'They' gave us a punitive PN to get us started of 1000 when we started out ..... I've used 5 different scratch crews in the last couple of months in the 70 minute pursauit format races (we now have only a 39.5 minute period to try and get past a very large fleet).  We now have our number 'pulled' further by over 10%  as a result of these initial races !!  .... we obviously looked too fast !

However it is easy to sail and has exceptional handling - it means we can focus on the racing and boat tactics and still have alot of fun with crews that vary from very experienced to relative novice.  I do not think we would seriously threaten good Merlins around typical courses but it is fast.  This was not our objective anyway - the aim was 'Tasar (or Blaze) performance' when it blows and 'Phantom pace' in the light stuff in a package that could competitively cope with a wide range of crew weights  .... I really think we are there now.

Shouldn't you be starting on 27 minutes Mike?  Giving you 43 minutes to sail or are you starting late to try and get your handicap revised up Wink

39.5 minutes to sail give you a handicap around 930 ish!  The Icon is quite quick but not that quick and as a general rule Burghfield sail development boats of 1000 unless you can come up with a better number and your 3 in the wednesday series overall at the moment suggest to me that its probably a little kind!

Hi Mark

27 is where we started .. we are now on 31.5 ... (in a 70 minute pursuit  that suggests 39.5 minutes of racing) Don't get too excited as the series has produced N12's and 200's etc nearer 1000 as well !!  It is applicable only to this series and is not just a 'boat' handicap of course.

The point was that ICON is easy enough to race enjoyably with scratch crew found around the club in much the same way as a lot of us (once upon a long time ago) yoofs sailed Enterprises etc years ago - a regular crew went AWOL and the owner/helm simply 'found' someone around their club half an hour before the race.  We learnt a lot off many off the better ones ... and yes one or two things to avoid off some others !!

So Icon is not complex, only a little more so than an Enterprise maybe .... but today you can get around more than a tad quicker ;-)

The other thing is that as this is personal handicap and Mike is multiple nation champion in the Blaze (not sure of his other exploits) he is likely to be significantly faster than the 'average' PY that will be given to the boat.

We have a Phantom sailor at Hunts who regularly sails the boat to around 980ish but he is top 10 if not top 5 nationally so we would expect this.

I am sure if a mid-fleet numpty such as myself has a go I would be nowhere near Mikes level of performance (this is based on my Blaze days when I was just the right side of being mid fleet at National events).

Didn't quite finish the fit out this weekend. Just need to bolt fittings to the front bulkhead though (toes strap and kicker blocks) and she'll be good to go. Oh, and the slot gasket.
Thinking of doing the Round Sheppey in September.

I see Mike has been sailing off 960 singlehanded at Burghfield recently, and still getting good results...

My boat will definitely be finished this weekend - its just typical that collecting the boat has co-incided with my busiest ever period at work. Still, getting really excited now, I can't wait to get sailing! It seems like ages since I had a boat all of my own to sail!

Peaky ...

All very well but has '04' got a name yet ?  Any more fit-out photos - we've just got to see your  'colour coded' lines ?
