Vareo might have been more apt.

spot on Russ- these are the boats I'd compare, I'd probably have the
Phantom in the mix too.

Most of the new boat tests are 4 pages - the publicity seems to be mainly through this forum!

I have to admit, I thought boats like the D1 and Vareo would be the most obvious comparisons, but reading a lot of these posts, it seems people are comparing their speed in different winds to that of a Laser and, I'd guess the Laser and Solo were chosen as boats for comparision due to the huge fleet sizes.

Yep, I am up for that....

Although Burghfield is not the best place to do it.

Hayling would be perfect, or Queen Mary, just somewhere you can put the kite up and not worry about hitting the bank in 5 secs.

Is it just me.

Does any one else have a problem with the main sheet
horse getting tangled around the end of the tiller?

Its happened a couple of times in the past and i've been
meaning to put some elastic between the balls to take up
the slack but after Sunday mornings sail its now a must
do.

Basically it was a blustery, although not that strong
beat. I arrive at the windward mark on Port just in side
a Phantom. He tacks for the mark just as a gust hits and
ends up stalled for a couple of seconds, so rather than
bear away behind him as was my original plan I tack tight
on the mark, hike hard and dump a load of main sheet to
initiate the bear away and shoot straight into the lead
only to find that the horse is tangled around the tiller
again and I cant stop the bear away so swing round gybe,
and capsize causing havoc for the boats coming up behind
us....

Yes, it's a fecking nuisance happened a couple of times.

Wait til you break the centreboard, but dont realise it and the thing gets
in irons constantly and you think it's something you're doing wrong, then
you can't right it because the centreboard is flapping about loose in the
case...

Traveller Tangles .....Yep, me too - got the boat rigged on Saturday, first sail was a race in in light winds to 6kts - all fine. Next race was 8kts gusting in squalls up to 20kts plus. Had exactly the same problem with the tiller and traveller .... only found out after the second capsize!!! By far the best capsize of the day was when the kite was half up during launch and the 25kt gust hit. Don't try this at home!!!! (moral of this story - look out behind you )

Boat great though; quick and balanced .... unlike its owner.

No idea, could have been me standing on it, could have been beaching it last
week, but it's been going forward for a while which I thought was a bit
strange.

sounds like a plan chaps! Didn't DSM try to do a three way comparison with the 100, Halo and D-One... what happened to that?

D1 was a 'no show' on the day.  You'll just have to find out for yourself  (or ask the  testers) how Halo compared to the 100  ......  ;-)  I think the formal reviews will be out soon ...but are/ will be seperate.  It might have made a lot of sense to compare D1 and 100 directly and we were originally invited along to give a bit of alternative context in my opinion.  We expected Halo to be exceptional upwind and when reaching as is the Blaze and I believe that is what was clear to all - we did not necessarily expect it to be as relatively potent offwind though.  But choosing a boat is not simply about speed - you can very easily choose faster boats.

It bears repeating as ever therefore, try them all for yourself.  No one class suits everyone and you just have to decide what sort of sailing is for you.  If anyone wants to see/try Blaze or Halo just get in touch and we are happy to bring both along to clubs and to keen groups who want demonstrations.  The CA is always happy to be involved as are we ..

Mike L.
