Used the 10.2 for the first time last night, and what a difference..
I guess I'm just power hungry, but I'll not be going back to that small sail anytime soon unless of course it's howling. I've been mixing it with the *mackerel fleet on and off ever since I first set sail with the 8.4. mind you it has been iffy windwise, but the mackerel sailors and they were ahead of me a fair bit.. Clearly I'm not good enough making it go upwind yet, so having the extra power helps, I just sheeted out a bit and footed off more which seems to work, the big sail doesn't point anyway so autocorrects my stuffing nature. It also put paid to attempts by my old Blaze's new owner to ruin my day. I was able to mix it with the Contenders upwind, not quite on their pace but near enough to give them their just deserts with the kite offwind and as we tend to finish on a downwind leg enough to see me place ahead of them last night, which would have been a good result were it not for the fact that Dumb and Dumberers brain transplant seems to have taken, and they sailed a blinder in an L3k to totally take me apart, I'm sure they've modified with bits from their V3k even so it shouldn't have beaten me so grudging credit to them, other than that it would have been a good result, much harder to sail but that kept me on my metal so other than one 360 spinning kite drop with helm pirouette and a crap start, I did ok for the first time. *For mackerel read laser, they often trail feathers whilst they dawdle round the course, trying to get something positive from the experience, it alleviates the obvious boredom of sailing in a laser. Graeme and all, quick reminder about how important the cunningham is - if you need to depower, do not be afraid to heave on it...as per the tuning guide. There are not many dinghy rigs you can get to do the winsurfer floppy leech thing! Good that GRF is enjoying the 10.2. the other question I was asked was about sailing in the real light - how to get the leech un-hooked - my take is you cant always, so just keep as many leech tell-tails flying as possible, and sheet well out. The lower "luff" tell-tail just ignore when really light - use the middle one. i was sailing wednesday eve with some minimum kicker and cunningham, but outhaul well on as per tuning guide, then for interest pulled the kicker on 50% took creases out with cunningham, and eased outhaul a bit - as you might expect a laser rig to look - I dont think it was slower - who knows might be faster, but it felt twitchier and a little less responsive. I think I would still opt for the former set-up. In sub 5 knots, I beat a couple of well-sailed FF's, some Waybargeand 200s on hcap, but it was close: the joy of course in those conditions is being able to use the kite on tightish reaches. Nick. |

Absolutely Jimbo, the Phantom is much more of a comparative with the 10.2m rig (from what i have read) But Y&Y only compares with two boats, and the Solo and the Laser are not exactly the best choice are they? Surely the Vareo and the D-one would of been best?? |

you're probably right, but strangely the solo and the laser were the main two alternatives I was thinking about when I decided to go for the RS100

Hey James don't forget the first UK fleet...and the first to have a RS circuit
event ..... two (soon to be three) in Lymington. Not sure how Graham at his weight is not liking the 8.4, its a fab sail even at my weight. Still noticeably quicker upwind than the Laser. But he is tempting me to unwrap the big one shortly ![]() |

Well the non-slip on the 100 has just about completely knackered my already old wetsuit now - so what are you all wearing - wetsuits? hikers? jokes about too much friction aside, anything over the top to reduce wear? Edited by asterix |

If there's wind, the 8.4 is definitely faster than the laser up wind and down, it's just not as fast when the wind drops below a certain threshold, like any battened sail over none battened sail, soft sails are always faster in wind up to about 5 mph I'd say. That and when it is breezey we do have a half decent laser sailor at our club who mullers me when it's windy, even in the Blaze. He's now switched back to his Musto and I wanted to continue in my quest to take a race off him. What I'm now wondering is wether I can get away with rigging the 8.4 on the Mast set up for the 10.2 without all that pfaffing about taking the extension out, I intend to try it tomorrow.. |

Has anyone found the best way of lowering the mainsheet cleat to stop it cleating when you don't want it to?

Loosen the bolt in the middle (you have to take the ratchet off) and you can adjust it. The ratchet is easy enough to remove even with the spring in place.
