There's no point having sour grapes about it mate. Y&Y are sponsoring the Battle of the Classes, so it's no surprise their 'independent tester' will be there racing in it.
The prize is an RS Tera- so again no surprise that the new RS boat will be given a lenient handicap in return- I guess he can pick which rig he takes depending on the forecast.
A 70-odd kilo moth sailor ought to be pretty competitive with the 9m rig looking at the forecast... irrespective of the handicap. Anyway, good luck to Mr Holman, who is planning on taking the second spot? You ought to go mate- show that the boat is great for ex-olympic squad monkeys and us muppets alike ![]() |

Maybe he tested it and liked it so much he bought one? After all, he has tested a lot of other boats for Y&Y and not become class manager after.
Ah, but then I always see the straight forward solution. Sadly, time has often proved me wrong... |

Rupert, i really hope that's the case. But as you know i am always a little cynical. Especially when coupled with the event PY's, and an RS sponsored prize. Its easy to see why i am a little suspicious!

It is easy to draw those conclusions, but I don't think it helps... imho would be far better that the Aeros and Zeros raced together without any handicap b**locks to be totally honest. If it weren't for the BB, a graceful retreat from the one seemingly being knobbled would probably be the right approach. Take them up to Leigh & Lowton instead....
I'm sure each has will have a solid record of their respective strengths and compromises in the fullness of time, but in the interim just sailing first across the line smiling would be far, far better for both boats' PR.

James what a great post, i agree completely. Its something that the RYA PY list for the event just states RS Aero...perhaps there is still a hangover of confusion over rigs from the 100 days, for our beloved governing body! its just such a shame that people are not allowed to make their own minds up with out this kind of twaddle! Let both boats race man on man, speed difference over the water makes no real point anyway! But a Zero racing off the same py as the Halo/Blaze, is frankly mental. In my mind the gracious thing for the Zero's to do is pull out of the event and race somewhere else. Its not like there is any real support for the event anyway looking at entry lists.
be a bit embarrassing RS Aero winning its own brands donated prize when its being sailed by someone that now works for the class anyway, even if as i suspect they will donate the proceeds to the charity......If they actually win it mind you (apologies to the other competitors who i have wrongly overlooked)

Not sure I understand why the Zero would pull out of the race because of a potentially slightly harsh PN? Surely the handiacpping is meaningless to most who are watching, who will see what boats appear fast on the water. This is a great chance for the 2 classes to be compared against each other and other older classes. Looking forward to seeing what happens, & hope the video is put up somewhere.

Its certainly not worth a boycott - not sure what the basis for the "Bart number" is, but I had assumed that it was Great Lakes, which has D zero at 1010 (tough hcap!) but Aeros on 1025. 1015 and 995 for Aero 5,7 and 9 respectively which is even harsher.
I suspect that 1040 will be about right for the Aero 9, I certainly wouldn't bet the house on Pete winning on that - and the prize goes to best combined 2 boat class performance. I will just turn up and race my @rse off with my great pal James Green in the other boat, have fun and will see what will happen. NE on Southampton water is a massive shift fest so pure speed vs handicap will be a little bit less dominant than usual. I quite like Myles Mence in the blaze in those conditions. And the firefly guys are good I think, nice boat for lots of tacks! |

well, the Lymington demo proved that they do. And now one of their sailors is effectively an employee of the class. ... well, the Grafham demo proved that they do. And now one of their sailors is effectively an employee of the class. _____ Local class racing building at grass-roots is fantastic for the sport, and both Pete and David are fantastic ambassadors for the sport. Perhaps the two of them can get together with Allan Cross from the National Watersports Festival for 2015? Some modern beach boat racing would have been a nice addition to it. They can call it a 'Nationals' if there really is a need cling on to 20th Century dinghy sailing nomenclature....

Jimbo. David doesn't work for the Zero Class. He has a Zero dealership and is doing a bloody good job across the country. He took the opportunity on after the Grafham fleet had been established(albeit in an embryonic fashion)
In fact he is not on the committee. The committee for the D-Zero will be made up of volunteers, unpaid for their work and will work ONLY in the interest of the class. Much like MOST other Class associations. Unfortunately setting up a class association from scratch is not just as simple as employing a class 'Manager' you need to develop class constitutions, official rule sets, set up bank accounts etc. etc. just to even get RYA affiliation. Anyway i digress... you know what i meant by People being allowed to make their own minds up. Slapping the recommended PY on one class (after being told you needed returns by BAz at the RYA - You sent the email) then allowing another new class to keep its recommended PY but by definition of not pigeon holing the rig. Is in my opinion not fair or acceptable. Both classes should be hobbled so that they could not win the event....Sadly i feel the Aero will run the 9m rig off 1040 (their biggest fleet Bowmoor runs the Aero off 1025!) send out the wrong message to people who are not so in the know.
