Just look at the number of Lasers on the market at the moment, prices are definitely down when you consider I sold my 167,000 series hull for £1900 last year. That was just the boat, std rig, XD controls and 2 sails. Now you can get a 180,000 or newer for that sort of money if you look round.

So the Laser has just got even more attractive  Wink

If money is your primary consideration then yes....

So what boats are all the new Aero sailors coming from? Lasers?   "Classic" old design slow single handers? Newer faster single handers? Double handers? Just curious to know if a trend is emerging yet. (Same question for the D-0 but this is the wrong thread.)

Seems to be a mix of single handers.

I know of sailors from the following classes that have switched to  the D-Zero/Aero:

Laser
Streaker
Finn
Europe
Phantom

Plus all the RS squaddies who have stepped across from Teras/Fevas. Not sure if any Topper kids have made the jump though (depends on how serious they are on the RYA squads I would guess).

I am yet to see an Aero in the flesh but I will rectify that at the show. I do think that D Zero and Aero will at last make serious dent in Laser. For the first time ever there is a realistic alternative. I think some other peripheral classes will be affected as well however and that is a shame. Solution, Lightning et al ? The fabulous Byte C2 will of course rise above it all sailed by beautiful women and  athletic men.

Only one I know of is selling a Musto to buy an Aero. Not had a chance to talk to him, but I'd suspect because he simply can't get to sail regularly enough to be seriously competitive in the Musto.

I'd suspect your man is just as likely to be looking at the aero instead of the musto from a purely cost and hassle point of view.

We've heard it before but really Mustos or RS700s once you have the knack are not difficult to sail. I only sailed my 700 about 10 times in 2014 but Im pretty confident I was competitive whenever I sailed it. The biggest issue with these boats is looking after the spinnakers and making sure they are cleaned and dried which isnt easy when you live in fairly standard house with a family who dont want your kite in the bathroom!
I can fully understand the rationale for moving to an aero on this basis alone. Its why I'm eyeing up OKs!

So is spinnaker hygiene for the RS 700 different to any other boat?

Doesnt everyone wash their spinnakers in menthol head & shoulders? :)

My point is that if you have a singlehander as a 2nd boat do you really want the phaff of looking after spinnakers, replacing control lines and elastic take-ups and paying fairly hefty insurance premiums?
