Well, if a club is trying to promote fleet racing then they may well wish to strongly discourage direct competitors to their existing strong classes. Multiple rig boats are potentially a particular problem since even if you have a number of them they will be different anyway.

I can also see why clubs with strong laser fleets are protective, and the multiple rig thing is always going to be an annoyance from a handicap perspective but 10 boats at Bowmoor is amazing! I was thinking 4 D Zeros at Oxford this winter was good going... But 10 prelaunch? kudos to RS - never underestimate that marketing machine!

Yes how are Chew preventing it? I know about the waterboard and foilers but not this?

No club has a single one!

Until people have had their sails and taken up their option on their order, then it's just speculation .....

There is certainly growing dissatisfaction with the laser and it's great that there are shaping up to be some far superior modern options at last. At club level core laser fleets have been dropping away. Take Cotswold , apparently only one regularly raced laser left and 16 supernovas.

All clubs want stability or growth in numbers, especially in recent years and whilst I personally don't agree with restricting fleets, I think it's a very good thing to encourage and support appropriate fleets. If a club has lots of one boat, other sailors of the same boat are encouraged to join. If new sailors come to the club, they also will be more likely to start sailing the ' club' boat so ultimately the racing is better.

However, whilst I don't doubt that lasers will be littering gardens and dinghy parks for decades and plenty sailed....and at the top level big fleets continue, I think lots of club sailors are really ready for these new up to date boats and IF they test well and people genuinely like them, then an exclusion policy will ultimately be to the detriment of a club.

Did someone mention Canute..

Similar at Hunts, we do have a core of people who still race Lasers but it seems that we rarely all sail on the same day for various reasons.

Now talking about the Solo Fleet, now that is a competitive fleet with good regular turnouts and a few who are definitely top of the fleet material. There is at least 1 Laser regular who is being lured away (and it isn't me, but if I had the cash for a 'go faster' Solo I might be tempted).

We also have a potential 6 Fireballs who are going to be sailing regularly.

I may have worded that slightly misleadingly. You can sail Aeros and Zeros at Chew, but the committee has turned down requests to have demo days hosted there. I know they are just trying to protect the Laser and Solo fleets, both of which are pretty strong, but still it seems a shame.

That's really interesting, because from other sources I have heard it's much less.  That would also be near half of the regular number of sailors there! It's not exactly a big club! Fair play if that's fact, but as Simon says no one has one yet....so proof is in pudding and all that
