Current hisc handicaps are 1034 for a blaze and 1118 for a standard laser according to their website. Which is a big shift for the laser, but there is a big tide effect there.

Hi Neptune
Well that's changed since I last sailed there ... I stand corrected / updated ! So that would be the same listing then that now has the 600 ... er also adjusted to 905 then ? ![]() I naturally trawled through a few other alterations and came across the following examples: Phantom - 1025 505 - 871 Merlin - 990 300 - 1005 400 - 930 Vareo ..... 1083 (what goes there ?) RS 200 .... 1088 (surely not - same as a N12 !) I'm sure some of this has to do with 'open water' effects at HISC as well as variation in general fleet ability at HISC but there are still one or two surprising ones in there. Mike L. |

having sailed both, don't focus on the PY, that's always going to be a measure of "actual" mixed with a "dose of BS", I'd focus on the more important factor, for me at least = grin factor. Blaze vs Laser, 'measured' on grin factor, no contest, Blaze every time.... |

I mentioned it at the club.....didn;t see any point labouring it - obviously its wrong and "my" handicap, apart from me, should be about 980 i reckon ![]() Perhaps the HISC Vareo's also have an aversion to their kites - a bit like our local's ![]() The 200 is a surprise though....

QMSC has the Blaze at 1039 and Laser at 1091
HISC explain their methodology. Anyone know what the QMSC adjustments are based on?

I'd imagine it's an 'upwind' offset rather than downwind... ![]() |

Hi GK
On a bit of a mission there are we ? So what has got your goat about the Blaze in particular today then ? .... since you did not answer my query can we assume you are getting stuffed royaly by them in your whatever/wherever ? ![]() A case of "if you can't beat them then question the other boats PN" - The logic is it is never 'my' boat or 'my' helming it is always 'your' boats PN etc (cos it could not possibly ever be 'your' helming)..... Go on, afraid you might like it a bit .... but why not try one and show us how 'easy' it is to sail a Blaze to a PN of your preference ? Beware though - you would not be the first to cross over after a mid-life conversion. And to address your query about QMSC - Do not know personally but let us hope it is that thing called 'results' - Phew what a shocker that would be ..... 'local Blazes' can even be sailed 7 points lower than the 'national' PN at an open water location such as QMSC. One of the real problems to do with PN's in general is the 'primary' status of the Laser. Lasers are sailed eveywhere but struggle at some locations particularly in lighter winds - plus today they have a very very wide helming ability range. The conditions thing applies to the Tasar in my experience as well but in a decent blow it has a ball - as can the Laser if the nut on the end of the extension is half decent. Mike L. PS - As ever do not take anything said by me on any forum too seriously !! I'm only trying to get you into a Blaze after all - and I did not start this 'thread'. |

Not regarding the Blaze (or any other boat come to that)......the way the PY system currently works does concern me though (as I indicated in my previous post).
Although your post is presented in a very lighthearted, good humoured way, it does have "lets get personal" undertones. I'm not sure why, I have been polite, made no personal digs (p***taking), stayed on topic, presented relevant posts and asked genuine questions. I am puzzled?
If you (or anyone else) have an issue with me personally then PM me, we can chat it over, clear the air. Itll also avoid "guessing"

..... we all know Kurio99 is a Cirrus sockpuppett
Well news to us - honestly I've no idea who Kurio is .... I have never used a 'name' that could not be easily identified to me personally btw and don't hold any truck with 'puppet' stooges or multiple anonymous identities on this or any other forum. (some are a tad too obvious as well !!) On the subject of names we all know who GRF is as well and I've always enjoyed the 2-way street of mutual p**s taking from Greame and others ...... It is a only a forum after all. GK - no personal stuff intended whatsoever .... just perhaps a little less than suble banter in the same sort of vein that Greame and others direct towards me ... and vice versa. It is lighthearted and is the sort of stuff drifing around in conversation over a beer after sailing most weekends. 'Proper' debates on PN are frequent and endemic on this forum and far too many are anecdotally driven by oblique references to this particular class or that enjoying a 'better than they deserve PN' The PN system works and is only driven by submitted results - It is not a perfect system but if people want to race in handicap it is about as good as it gets.... Clubs also can and do adjust local numbers so I see no real problem if done properly - That is provided ALL classes involved are subject to the same identical process and the club makes public their full workings. If anyone cares to know I am actually very much in favour of variable personal handicap racing at club level. This can take into account differences in classes, locations, conditions and the helms and will get more people into racing dinghies regularly. Maybe it would work for a proportion of club level races - the 'best' still have a real challenge but frankly do not need additional trophies etc and the relative novice/improver really has something to work towards. They have got to enjoy their racing as well if we want to sustain large and growing fleets. Wonder why Golf clubs are doing so well - and at their price level ? It is because the 'average' guy can play with the 'best' and both still have a good day out ... but the serious stuff is still 'level' competition. Oh God ! I'm going all serious all of a sudden - time to go sailing. Mike L. |
