Rick,

My point was that there are very few all female teams in the sport, and as such to suggest that number of all female double trap teams might be in a similar proportion.

I guess I am reflecting the concerns of the women sailors I know who are concerned that the sports bureaucrats might not set the bar high enough because of some 19th century vision of what is lady-like.

... ah I see. That may well be the case but I don't know on ANY all women teams sailing twin trap boats with any success ... anyone know of any?

Do you think that might be because they are below the minimum sensible weight?

Kita might manage and enjoy crewing a 49er, but she is sailing with a bigish bloke. Imagine if it were two of her, they might not be so happy in any wind at all.

Other twin wire boats out there (I14, 5000, Boss, RS800) are equally unsuited to two women in terms of weight and height.

I'll be interested to see how many all girl crews sail in the 29XX if they sell enough to get a circuit and don't get selected for the olympics. I imagine it will be more than in the other twin wire classes.

If you consider classes already like the Cherub and the current RS800, are there many successful all female teams within these classes? The proposed class for the double-handed skiff is going to be very similar in design by my guesses and by viewing like classes, is there a big increase in females sailing within these designs? The double handed female skiff will be successful in some respects as it gives female youth sailors something to aim for which is specifically designed for them, however, given the right prompting and the right coaching, there's nothing to say that they couldn't compete within the 49er class. Two enthusiatic male youth sailors will be given encourangement and support to cross over from 29ers, I'd be keen to find out if the case would be the same if it was two female sailors. And reckon it will only be a matter of time before sailing goes through an equal oppurtunities faze where classes will have to be open, due to the fact that discriminating against sex will be viewed as discrimination. Sport will most likely follow industry where you can't discriminate against the sex of a person for the suitability of a job.

I think the number of existing all female twin trap teams today is beside the point. The class will be defined in 2007 for the 2012 Olympics. This means there will be 4 years to cultivate the teams around the world.

Before the L5000 the only route to twin wiring for either sex was the I14 and the market was small - then it grew considerably and grew again with the 49er and RS800.

In any Adult class other than the womens 470 fleet, how many top all female teams are there even when the boats are perfectly suitable?

Dinghy sailing is unfortunately male dominated. The number of top all female teams is probably in proportion to the number of all female teams in comparison to all male teams.

Perhaps this is the crux of the issue ...

Anyone know what % of sailors are female and how sailing compares to other sports on this?

I'd suggest at risk of getting battered that most sports are male dominated ... except horse riding perhaps ...?
