I have been looking at Graeme's new boat and I would have the folling comments. It looks a very nice boat. The design seems well thought out but there seems to be quite a bit of cost cutting. Hence I suppose the low cost of the boat! The main halyard is far too strechy. When you pull the sail to the top of the mast and apply the cuningham you can but the sail a good half foot back down the mast. The seperate forestay jib luff tension is good but the jib is attached with some very flimzy push clips. I cant see these surviving. Just have to see if I can beat him in the 3000. |

True the main halyard is a bit stretchy but also the fact that its one line rather than 2:1 is what i think may be the bigger problem. (It's why 600s use the downhaul to crank on the halayard after the sail has been pulled up) As for those push clips, they are used on the 9er range as well as others like the 800, so its relatively safe to say that they'll survive just fine on the 500. |

Just clarification on the plastic clips, they are designed to break if you fall in the sail rather than you ending up with a hole in the sail. The logic being that replacing a few clips is cheaper than replacing a jib.

Stretchy main halyards are easily dealt with. One they will stretch less and less after a while once they sty stretched. On the 2000 and to a lesser extent the 400 we always pulled the main to the top of the mast, put it in the cleat then give it another pull. You can move about another inch often.
In the 2000 we then connect the down haul and pull it on as hard as we could then release it give the main halyard another tug now when we first end for ended the halyard we could get about another 8 cm out of it after that. Ive known people in the 400's stand on the boom then pull more up but that seems excessive! Edited by Calum_Reid |

When I said strechy, I meant really strechy. The sail moves back down the mast over half a foot! I can notice stretch when I pull a one foot length of it with my bare hands, this cant be right. Maybe they should have used some dynemma but that is expensive.

Sounds like the knot was slipping on the head of you're mainsail there Andrew - The RS500 uses the same aramid haliard as all the other RS boats - Selden fit the haliards to all the RS masts from the same roll of rope, so theres no skimping from our end. It should be 4mm kevlar. Some stretch of the outer casing is normal when its new, but not as much as you mention. 6 inches could be the rope slipping in the cleat aswell - Make sure its well pushed into the clamcleat teeth, and try not to hoist the sail with the haliard in the clam cleat as this blunts the teeth of the cleat. |
