Paul Goodison manages fine sailing his laser flat without the gunnels dragging in the water all the way up the beat. If iGRF spent as much time lookig inwards as he spends looking outwards then he would have figured out this sailing game a long time ago.

Yay - chainsaw a laser, although just a fake one please; no need to chainsaw one that's paid its design royalties.

Pretty sure I'd qualified the flat statement in the buttock plane - both these examples especially the excocet are very flat in that respect. Both of these have almost boat like curvature in the section plane which is a lower wetted surface / lower form drag solution in pre planing and displacement speed ranges. Yep if you found somebody who could add a foot of depth to the laser in a material that incurred no extra weight penalty, then I would still sail the original if my life depended on it. My CoG lower, less windage, identical flat water hydrodynamics/hydrostatics, less parasitic volume so less motions / added reisitance in waves, whats not to like?! |

It's not just that it floats higher, it's the dynamic reaction at all points of the extra volume. The resistance to heeling, the extra support for rig loads, in light weather the ability to roll heel and reduce wetted surface.
The laser has quite a flat bottom, making it bigger in those curved side walls would also be a benefit. But whatever, we'll go round and round and disagree and it can't be proved either way until someone physically goes out and does it. But you're all wrong just the same. ![]() |

I didn't say a foot I said a couple of inches...
Don't put words in there because you've lost the argument now ![]() |

So if you kept adding a few more inches you'd float even higher?
you could keep adding the inches and then you've built a flying boat! That's how that Wayfarer did it!! |

Ah Alex, be careful - he's moved the goalposts. Without admitting that theory was complete nonsense, we've now moved to whether a laser with more freeboard but identical in every other way (ie with a free-lunch) would just be faster. Like it matters.
Its typical politician disassembly - when your stance on an issue is shown to be ridiculous, what you do is sneakily move the discussion on, claiming you were talking about something else all along, and hope no one notices. Luckily, as its sailing (well peripherally) its far more interesting than politics. And tickling to see what rubbish comes from Kent next is certainly more entertaining than debunking Keynesian economics or endogenous growth theory or whatever it was

Please qualify that: "East Kent", i.e. Men of Kent, not to be confused with the higher species, Kentish Men. But you are right - a distinct shift in the goalposts. We may consider the argument won. What a disappointment though. There I was looking forward to telling my grand-children about the day I witnessed a discovery as great as Newton's with the apple. Was all set up to take screenshots of my name next to Grumph's and everything.

Eh? Surely if you cut it in half neither part will go very far.................or did I miss something 50 pages ago? Why not just cut it in half and leave it at that?
