I can only second Igrf's main points. Its a great boat, I was lucky enough to sail for a month. Its a delight to sail, but like all powerful boats needs practice time, that said in light to moderate any decent club sailor can handle it.

I can only echo these comments.... I bought my boat on the strength of what my son told me about it, in essence. The boat is wonderful.

This is a big day for this forum, Grf admits he was wrong ... Have a good look guys and girls as it will be a long time before we could see this again, now if you could just review your position on the lee bow effect and drunk driving whilst your in the mood ... GRF - hats off to you ... it's certainly a day that'll down in the anals of Y&Y forum. Go one say it again ........ I WAS WRONG .... love it
![]() Got my D-one earlier this year and have had a few swims, but couldn't care ... if you persevere the sailing just gets better and better. I was wrong to too - it sails like a dream, is remeniscent of a Finn upwind, is a blast downwind and really nicely built. BUT is is still not pretty (looks like an aenemic preying mantis when it's undercover on the hard!!) - but who cares .... just can't wait to go sailing every time I get a chance. |

I lent my boat to a pretty good phantom sailor yesterday. I think he rather liked it. I'm hoping he remembers to bring it back tomorrow.
I like mine so much I'm going to sell it......and buy another one!

Well Pete (our Blaze sailor) took it out in the club race today and pretty much lead all the way round, it was a bit of a freak wind all over the place race, but it and the D Zero were out front a lot of the time, meanwhile we're sinking in the light stuff from those stupid no use to man or beast self baler things.

Thanks GRF.
Having owned a D-One for four years and lived through all the negative hype and cr** it's nice to see that FINALLY people are sailing it and realising what a great boat it is. D-Zero coming soon - can't wait! Keith. |

What interests me is how/why iGFR developed such strong opinions on the RS100 & D-1 and then spent a long time pedalling them on-line only to discover the RS100 didn't live up to the hype and that the D-1 is in fact a very nice boat ... All the evidence was there at the time yet his opinion was polarised in the other direction. At least he is man enough, on this one occasion to admit he's wrong, but how did he get there? The best advice, which was offered at the time, is to try both boats prior to purchase ... never buy off plan.

That's a rather simplistic appraisal of the situation...
I don't doubt for one minute which is the better boat and I haven't for some time. But at the time the launches the RS100 was not far off half the price of the then 1:1 FX that cursed the early iterations of the D-One marketing campaign - if you can call it a marketing campaign. Some grainy video of Sten sailing that 'royal blue' bathroom suite and Luca ranting when there seemed to be some fairly universal dislike towards the aesthetics- less of an issue today 1) they've tidied it up immensely and 2) 'skiff' styling looks a bit old hat now anyway.
Coupled with some further major considerations around the RS 'machine' support being strong enough to kick-start the programme- culminating in 43 boats at the first nationals (has either class matched this domestically in the UK to date???), for early adopters in the UK there was really only one sensible choice- even if it wasn't 'the better boat' in the longer term. Sure, what is now, 6 or 7 years after the initial discussions about prototypes hit this forum, it's easy to say 'on reflection we were wrong' for all manner of reasons. The biggest one for me personally is what Tim identified from the outset- multiple rigs - it's failed big time and some have lost faith in the parent brand as a result. The company who had built their reputation for bringing all sailors together, had indadvertedly launched a product which drives them apart.... I hope the RS Aero restores that to some level, maybe even challenging the multiple rig failing- although I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole until I saw where the 9 ends up with a more established position in the sailing scene. But at that time, in the UK at least, the D-One just looked a little wrong, was priced a little too high and was hampered by a domestic competitor with frankly far stronger positioning. These things take time to break down organically, even if the D-One had the first-to-market advantage and would have been be a clear favourite on an impartial test sail. Any lessons for the future? Sure, be carefully buying into an new class, or don't give a sh*t and go enjoy sailing whatever it is.... no news there then. Edited by kneewrecker - 21 Jul 14 at 11:43am |
