You forgot "We'll pay the VAT"...
Does selling boats like selling cars actually work? Genuine question - for all I know it does, but I can't picture it.

Maybe someone (Cirrus!) should run a sweepstake on what the list price will be revealed to be. £1 to enter, closest guess takes all (or gets an extra discount on their new Icon...).

The moment you start commercially laying epoxy foam sandwich into a mould it's going to cost topside of 5k and that's without the bits.. I take it the iCon is epoxy, haven't really checked, just like to wind the old boy up.
No, dinghies don't get sold like cars because the market never got structured properly from the off which was precisely why the windsurfing business did, we looked at the dinghy market at the time as a business model example of exactly how not to do it. Laser trying to direct sell on one hand and only offering 16% margins on the other, they really are to blame for the poor set of affairs you as consumers are faced with. The reason RS are so successful (other than the fact they had a tie in with us in the early days)is precisely because they were retailers first and had to follow a vertical market because the margins offered to them were so poor. That and the tight fisted impecunious nature of GP 14 anoraks who'd come into the store with a pile of pennies and complaining about being short changed half a p by the bus conductor. And moaning tightwads like you lot that think being charged £20 to enter a regatta is bad form as a customer base.. Feck me, enter this market? I'd be barking. Edit.. Sweepstake? My Guess £7495 (Show Offer)

Is there a Holt still? I thought the World was Allen shaped these days and apparently very good they are to.
I shall be Spinlocking my way wherever possible, but I think the Harken name is tainted by association with 'orrible boats, not least the bloody Alto had it's name all over it and on reflection what a nightmare that turned out to be, (from a strictly consumer stand point of course) the boat remains affectionately in a good place even though three years later it's a pile of junk and so much scrap in need of a total overhaul.

The £ 1 sweepstake idea might not be a bad idea ... with the pot going to a sailing charity and an Icon shirt and association membership to the nearest (yes Cirrus have done similar offers in the past plus FOC entry to the Nationals for new boats ordered). And if you still don't want one a pint of Alexandra Palaces finest and the everlasting honour of beong able to say "I told you so ...."
But maybe you should all see the 'hare' that is Icon in the flesh first. Therefore come and see it soon or very early when the show opens. All 'bets' accepted up to 11.00 on the first day of the show note - for the 'standard list price' declared - and so 'we' don't cheat either place it in a sealed envelope with contact details. You have brightened up my afternoon !! Cheers - Mike L. |

Harken still think it's a bit 'Oasis' nineties..
Like Ronstan and those kewell Orbit blocks for none 'binary' stuff. So what does the iCon come with, I guess that makes a difference if we're sweepstaking the price, quite what I'd do with an iCon T shirt other than donate it to the special school opposite for them to dribble over..

Hi Greame
If you win you should think about keeping that T shirt .... you might need it yourself ! The pre-production boat (I have) is mostly with Allen for the control systems and Harken for the sheeting. Peaky may well do his own thing. Nothing set in stone just yet and we may still mix n match or go with one supplier for the show and as a default setup. Whats the problem with Allen/Harken ? Mike L. Do you have a class constitution and rules yet?
It's not just the hardware you have to buy into.... |
