I don't post often but as a young driver my thoughts might be useful. My first car (when I was 17) was a 1.6 16v astra. was about 8 years old and cost me £1100 to insure, which seems a lot but really isn't compared to other people I know with much smaller cars. With 2 years no claims I now pay under £600. Really old cars are expensive to insure because they are easy to steal, less safe to passangers, and more likely to crash. As other people have said try adding your parents to the policy and also try changing your job title (within reason) as that can make a big difference. In regards to towing, as people have already said, you don't really need a particularly powerful car. I'd just make sure it's big enough to fit all your kit. Astra or a focus sounds like a good option to me.
