Think the general fact of the matter is that certain boat manufacturers want to create a gap in the market and since there isn't a double-handed female skiff, there's the gap. Hope the Ronstan SK4 (?) gets the position, then it will be interesting to see if there is increased support to keep the 49er open if the 29erXX isn't selected. There are females who sail skiffs, Kita sails with me, Fiona Jordan sails 14s, sure there are a few other girls in the 14 fleet, Tracey Covell did exceptionally well in the 5000 and that's before considering female cat sailors. Would make more sense allocate the slot to a lightweight open skiff class, but reckon the 49er will be pushed in the direction of Male double handed skiff, there will be whatever is selected as the female skiff and a few years down the line, there will be another slot opened for an open skiff.

I'd be very surprised if you didn't agree with Kita! Seeing as she's your crew , but I do agree as both you and Kita will agree, I'm not the fittest guy in 49ers  but I sail them in club racing with 4 other boats. We are about as quick as each other, but there used to be a boat that was sailed by a husband/wife mix at our club who were a lot quicker than us! I never heard her moaning about the kite or the main being to much for her.

I have no reason to think that 2 reasonably fit and good female sailors would not be able to sail a 49er. Isn't it time for some of them to let us know what they think

Trina Elvstrom certainly was a crew.

True ... and the others had male crews.

My point is there are VERY free all female crews sailing twin trap boats.

Kita that is a fair point as you sail one (and I think it was my Cherub that you refer to!)

However you are probably the excpetion to the rule, most women at my club have no desire to sail a 49er as just by looking at it they think it's too big.  Fair play, just keep sailing and persuade them otherwise!

I have only sailed a 49er once myself in fairly light winds, and I did think there was quite a lot of kite to deal with, although I'm not the fittest and I had also not sailed a 12 at that time with a much bigger kite and no downhaul!

I'll still stand by my comment about 21sqm being as big as MOST girls want to handle, that's based on what female Cherub sailors have said (and was very much taken into account when the Cherubs went to the 2005 rules rigs) and also girls who I have taken out on my Cherub (although in fairness it's a lot easier dropping a kite in a boat that's actually long enough to stow it in!!!)

I think that can be said of sailing in general

Thanks Iain, yes it was Suicide Blonde that I was referring to

I think the problem with a lot of female crews...and I used to be like this myself.... is that they'll sail something like a 4000 and think "I wouldn't want to handle a kite any bigger than that!".....and they will keep thinking that until they sail something faster with bigger sails! I was terrified of the 49er before I actually saild one....but I now find the kite one of the easiest I have ever used....and this is on both the 49ers I have raced and sailed for almost a year and a half!

I personally don't think 21sqm is too big a kite for a female sailor....I know plently of females who sail Laser 5000's (and isnt the kite on that boat about 30sqm?).

Also, what is the issue with these female crews who have sailed fast skiffs with big sails.....why is so important if they were crews or helms? I used to helm and I really only started crewing properly after I broke my finger and had a 5 month session with no sailing....when I came back to sailing I just started crewing due to the person I sailed with. If I hadn't broke my finger I would probably not have stopped helming and could possibly be helming high performance skiffs myself now as I was beginning to helm Laser 4000's in 2004.....so in 2-3 years I would have advanced to something faster prob!

All I hope is that the 49er doesn't become isolated as a male only class.....cos that would be utterly pathetic

Ah well Kasey, you're young and fit... I was having a discussion with a lady who'd dropped out of 14 crewing at around the same time that I stopped crewing Cherubs, and in both cases it was the hoists and drops that were the major problem for more mature sailors like us...

Jim, we're talking about Olympic athletes here, so I think it's fair to assume they're going to be at least as fit as Kita.

Plenty of female crews in the B14 fleet, dealing with 29 sq/m of kite with no problems.
