Many classes seem to run as high a rig pre-load as the hull will stand. With a plank, you need a lot of pre-load to avoid the lee shroud going slack and hence the lee spreader doing nothing. As you say, the 'conventional' 3 wires and 2 spreaders is not the only or ideal solution. I think in the days of planky Hornets, diamonds and so forth were not unknown, but then they used to appear on 5-0's in those days. There are few like-for-like comparisons. You could say conceptually, the ultimate trapeze rig is a board with harness. Rig tension not required, shrouds not required..... |

Which does reinforce the suggestion from the Farr3.7 thread of an unstayed rig a la D1 that normal weight folk (under 80kgs) could trap from. |

I don't believe you need the lee spreader to do anything... Laterally its opposing the windward spreader, so of no value, and the fore and aft effect is identical to the windward spreader. To my mind you just need the mast step and tube to resist torsional loads. So I reckon rig tension merely needs to be sufficient to keep jib luff sag under control. Even torsion doesn't seem to be that big a deal. I don't have a tenon in the (very unconventional) mast 'step' on my IC, and the mast doesn't move. Edited by JimC - 13 Jun 16 at 9:20am |
