Not, I fear, necessarily the case, judging by the number of sailors I see having to maintain the stupid things at my slipway/pontoon equipped inland club.

I don't think the evidence backs you up. Arguably the best indication we have of popularity on the water is the number of races recorded in the PY system, and last year both the RS boats beat the respective Devoti boats. I shouldn't be suprised if its the same when this year's figures are published.

The only problem with that stat is that AIUI, a lot of MPS sailors are racing in class these days.

I don't think it will be healthy to have a 'head-to-head' with these two boats- upfront the answer to the conundrum is sail  both boats, pick the one you like most.  Assuming other things like club race micro-classes and financing don't get in the way.  The latter needing careful consideration- as in my experience, the upfront cost, especially a headline price, is not the true cost of ownership, it's the depreciation and burn rate on consumables.

Luca was part of the initial team who brought the product to market.

I suspect the RS will be the more commercial offering, we already know it has 3 sail sizes with different lower masts sections, aimed at the whole gamut of age range and sexes it'll be all over the vacation centres in no time flat and is geared for container based volume shipping, whereas the D0 is aimed more at the discerning Solo type, who unfortunately we all know has parsimony of GP14 proportions.

So actually two quite distinct micro markets, to me the RS looks more suited to the sea dweller and the D0 more inland if I had to call a difference. One's a sit on the other potentially a sit in.

It all makes choosing an issue.

Nice problem to be faced with though, hell not so long ago, I'd probably have bought both.

Yes, he's definitely got 'previous' which doesn't bode well, I do so hope he hasn't buggered about with it too much.

And whilst that could be seen as very distinct USP, especially in comparison to the moderate sail size announced for the D-Zero, sadly history pegs it clearly in the 'avoid at all costs' category; not unless a very clear and direct statement from the manufacturer, bolted down in the class constitution, announces otherwise.

In an ideal world, both boats would be a commercial success and new lasers would only be sold to sailors with Olympic aspirations Smile. Have got my fingers crossed.  LOL
It's just nice to see two new, well designed, entries into the laser/solo market and I wish them both the best.
From my point of view, comparing the two, for me( on what little we know) the d-0 is a very clever boat but it would not make me to change from my lightning/British moth/laser. I am still hopeful that the rs boat will suit  me better.
It's going to be an interesting dinghy show comparing the two and could be a very interesting couple of years in the dinghy market. At last. Big smile

out of curiosity, what would it need to do to make you want to change from the lightning/moth/laser... or what are you hoping for from the RS-0 to be significantly different?
