Seems like this thread is going nowhere and I must agree with Yellow Welly(pink boat). By the nature of any and all sports there'll be an optimum body size/ type/power/output with training designed around this. Naturally this will be "type forming" with only the super-talented being able to buck the trend.

Change the boat spec/ demands and for a while there'll be a range of differing builds until again the optimum is found and people train accordingly. If sportsmen and women want to win they'll drive themselves to the required optimums ..... Just ask Ben Ainslie (Finn vs Laser builds)

As for competitive weights, (for women, that's this thread innit) I'd say the medals at the last Olympics is a good indicator, of course we are to assume the Beep has inaccurately reported the athletes credentials, besides you stood next to them, which is a far better mode of assessment than the Olympic medical.

Finally 'self esteem' issues... Hmm there's something rather amusing about a bloke getting all defensive when he compares his build to female laser sailors, stopping a smigeon short of calling them a bunch of biffas....

Hilarious!  Why do you think that data comes from medical assessments?  Loving the addition of some sexism too, nice touch mate.

There are sailors in that fleet whose weights I *know*. One of them is 63 Kg.  She is very small when stood next to the girls in the top 10.  Another is 74Kg.  She is slightly larger than the average in the top 10.

But anyway, you carry on, I'm sure you're having fun.  Please don't be offended if I don't respond to you further though.

I'm 92kg and sail an RS200. These figures are official as I've just checked them and written them down, although that was just after breakfast. You can have those numbers if you like and quote them as accurate  Wink

Needs to sail more...

See even you're fudging the figures Mr Gruit - everyone knows that the time to weigh yourself is not after breakfast, but after getting up and just after a big poo.

I have now spoken in person (PM) to bustinben and his evidence reinforces my opinion. Let me say that I have done my very best to polite and inoffensive throughout this discussion. I wish that I had not started the thread using a persons name, it was a mistake as it was never intended to be personal.

I have never even criticized Laser. All I have done is try to promote the interests of average sporting women. Apparently women, "should drive themselves to the required optimum", thank you very much, "man up Girls".

All I ask is that another class for average weight ladies should be slotted in.

If you asked a welterweight boxer to loose his fitness and get fat so that he can be the only division available, middleweight......he may well punch you in the mouth.

Is that really what you think the top radial ladies do?

That would be because he's a boxer and thanks to a youth of being smacked in the 'ed, he'd lack the gray matter of a person of smaller stature in sailing to look at more appropriate avenues....

The RS:X girls aren't big by any stretch - although they've got big guts to hold onto an 8.5m sail when the rest of us 'freeride blokes' would be on 5.8s and lower!  The back end of a 470 offers plenty of scope for light weight women (and men), as to does the 49erFX with a matched crew or the Nacra....

I think if any woman has enough talent to make it through the squads, then the RYA performance team will nurture that into an appropriate class, and team mate.... just look at the teams in the new 49erFX, some of those are previous 470 sailors and I think, a radial sailor.

Instead of what?

Did you follow the RS:X/Kite fiasco last year? There won't be any new medals, and if there were the kites would get them, so what will you drop to let a 'little lady' class in?

I wouldn't bank on that, speaking as the father of a daughter who beat our current Olympian the one time they raced together.

And the Uncle of another who is currently considering Irish citizenship rather than continue to put up with their BS.

NO, that is the point. That is what YOU are asking aspiring single handed ladies to do.
