I'm not HP!
The Yoof and I were all set to spend the day GoPro filming the Alto (to got with a report/review that'll be appearing on these esteemed pages shortly, but I've woken up to find no wind! Back to bed for a bit and we'll go up this afternoon and attach the camera mountings in preparation for a decent blow during racing tomorrow. Gah!!!! |

It's warmed up
My gelcoat now goes off. Still a bit damp for epoxy though, it's setting like rubber (tips welcome)......windguru gives gusts of 30 blowing on shore, dumpy, so probably no sailing this w/e. Grumble, grumble.....Oh well, leave the boat in the garage and gild the lilly I suppose.Edited by transient - 12 Apr 13 at 10:16am |

Epoxy tips:
make sure the raio is correct. Too much resin or too much hardener- both are bad. Having siad that, consumer grade stuff is formulated with a large margin of error.

You may have hit the nail on the head. I'll get some graduated cups and see if there's an improvement. I do tend to get better results in lower humidity but it could be the poor mix quality is exacerbating the problem.

I use syringes to measure mine out. You can get them at farm suppliers quite cheap.

I normally get syringes on eBay. Use them for all sorts of things, measuring oil for the motorbike, greasing bearings. Really good if you want to touch up 2 pack paint. It's also worth measuring the catalyst on gelcoat. I use a plastic disposable pipette for that. |

I used a CFL bulb in a lead lamp to warm the area to be repaired - safe to leave on for hours 'cos it's not too hot like an incandescent would be. Also keep the repair materials indoors beforehand so they're not cold.

We also had rather extreme wind last night but I guess one of the advantages of lake sailing is that we can continue sailing when it gets blowy. The race wasn't cancelled, so the few of us who went out enjoyed some rather brilliant sailing, even if the racing wasn't all that tactical. Weighing 68kg in full rig laser with 45 knot gusts was rather interesting.

Bummer.....It does seem like the last 3 or 4 years have been getting progressively windier. I can't find any stats to back that up though, just a feeling. The forecast looks good for our first sail in our new 200 this sat, the challenge and excitment of a new boat
We hope to do some of the circuit this year and leave behind (partly) the vagaries of handicap racing. |
