Craigo - What you see is all in the gelcoat ...
The 'default' boats are white with 'Vela Grey' non-slip or 'Vela Grey' with white non slip areas... chosen becuase they work very well with the colours of ropes, webbing etc. We are doing a couple of non standard colour ones at the moment and they also look good .... Ah well it is a pretty boat whatever ! Mike L. |

As a life long supporter of the Scottish rugby team I really couldn't be happy with a boat in the Wales colours

Anybody done anything as technical as set the rig on the iCON with a loos gauge. If so what settings have been found to be best in lght, medium and heavy conditions with 25st on board.
Any obeservations on rake? M

Hi Martin
Best to contact the CA - THE critical things are to get the boat up to speed are mostly to do with the jib and control of the slot by using the jib pole plus the sheeting of the main. I'm preparing the latest Devoti built ones for owners currently and they do need a few changes from 'as supplied' (Number 18 is being handed over tomorrow ....) Nohing major needs changing but a few tweaks really are needed but they are easily sorted. The rear strop as supplied is simply not right - you will never point well with it as on ex-factory hulls. Sort it as the boats are they are down here and it will point high enough to almost go up plate glass ! The rig can be run with higher rig tensions but frankly it works just as well at lower ones - a function of the custom mast really. This is regardless of crew weight as mainsheet tension and kicker are key there. Set the kicker up to take any (cunningham) crease out of the sail and .... leave. The tension lever provides plenty of the stuff and your rigging should have been supplied with optimal rake (imo) using the middle of the three adjuster holes. Key controls for all conditons = Kicker + Cunningham. It really is a simple set-up and all you need to consider is these ones across the wind range ... in higher winds you want the top of the main to start 'blading off' if this is not apparent then check the battens as well ..... Mike L. We sail '03' with about the same weight as you and it would be good sometime to get more of the boats together for a bit of 'boat on boat' stuff. A few are going to Famouth Week for sure - interested ? Edited by blaze720 - 20 May 13 at 8:51pm |

What mods are you doing, I am now sailing with a fixed strop, with sliding adjuster.

Martin
Our strop allows about 200mm of travel only... fixed and central should be fine but we think it better with limited travel... As supplied the Devoti built ones had a strop that allowed best part of 900-1000mm ! No real problem for owners and 10 minutes to sort but it does need doing. The KEY thing to master upwind is the use of the dangle pole ... the N12 guys will tell you it does not work .. well it does maybe because the rig is so different on Icon and we designed it in from the beginning with a proportionately larger jib. Once the basics are mastered the crew can 'play' the 'down pressure' upwind - they seem to work best when they apply pressure to the point where the main is just beginning to backwind off the jib then ease it a tad. It means as I work the mainsheet pressure the crew can match it on the fly ... 'blowing' to the point where I will start to ease the main upwind ? Crew matches the slot on the 'fly' ... try it ! All other angles ditto. Mike L. PS - Any plans to visit the 'tropics' that we bask in down here in the near future ? |

Was on business in Scotland today and we went back to the airport via Largs as we had a bit of time on our hand before our return flight. Presumably that was Scotsfinn's ICON in the sailing club dinghy park? Lovely colour and it looked b****y georgeous even with its cover on.
![]() Would have been good sailing there today. 21c and blowing a bit. |
