Well I certainly car topped a Contender back in the 80s, and a few others did too.

I know the Olympic guys used to car top their 470s over onto the continent, save on ferry charges.

As Jim says it wasn't unusual to see all sorts on a roof in those days.

I roof racked two lasers (piggybacked) on a Ford Cortina estate all the way across Europe to the Laser worlds In Sardinia. Corners were lots of fun! Roger Tush used to roof his 470 to Europe and ended up in a ditch, although as that was on a motorway, sleep was more likely to blame!

Didn't Uffa Fox famously car top his flying fifteen after just unbolting the keel and slinging it in the boot.

I borrowed a 14 dinghy mold from a firm in Southprt back in the early70's and after we had made a few fishing boats off it they wanted it back. We had no van anymore and the Southport people were getting stroppy so about 6 people lifted it onto the roofrack of my 1961 3.8 Jaguar. Carmen red with chrome wire wheels. The roofrack lasted until Ormskirk when it collapsed damaging the roof. The mold did not fall off and we roped it back on through the open windows through which we had to crawl to regain access. We returned the mold ok but when I think of what that car would be worth now.........and the way we treated it.....

Maybe we can use the volcanic dust to repair the potholes that KCC can't
repair cos they've still got 50 million quid up there..

22 hrs now
