I don't understand the underpowered comment - the rig looks towering in the video clip.
The profile of the main looks a bit odd (I thought this could be the camera angle too but the vid shows it as well) - the combination of long boom, straight leech and very mini square-top - a shorter boom with a more vertical leech would give better handling and look much more modern & racy. Maybe this is a by-product of the hull having been lengthened - it looks as though the extra length has all been added aft of the mast?
Looking damned good overall.
Mike

Sail shape looks good to me - too much square top and centre of effort would start to get very high. Looks plenty powerful to me, too. Pictures of sails rigged on the shore (and for that matter in real life at the dinghy show) never look quite right, as there is a tendency for the leech to look hooked if you put enough sail control on to take the creases out. Adding wind makes it all look good again. Really looking forward to seeing this boat on the water somewhere.

Not sure I get the underpowered comment either. Looks good to me.
I've promised Hannah that we have finally found the boat for us in a 12 (we have had quite a few different boats over the last few years) and although I'm not sure this will give us the same buzz we might just have to try one to check... especially with the price of a modern 12 being out of our range. Hi
The luff length is actually the same as a Blaze but the sail is obviously very different. The overall length of the spar is 50mm longer - all below the gooseneck - and this was done (along with lowering the floor) to give crew a bit more space compared to the development boat. The main is also smaller and the jib larger than the development set so the boom is now 120mm shorter. The 'towering' impression maybe because the mast is just 50mm o/d and being finished in white it appreas long(er) in photos than in life. The hull is stretched by 205mm (approx 8") and this is mostly in front of where the mast was ... but the mast is moved forward by around 40-50mm - so in summary the balance was moved and we got the larger jib the boat justified. We needed the 'extra' mostly to increase the jib (and allow a modest reducion in the main). The centre of effort is now lower and fractionally further forward. Combined with the extra width (not extreme) the production boat should be more effective still. Do not draw too many conclusions form Peakys vid clip as that was early in the rig development path and the main then was far too large (and a bit too flat!) and the boom way too low with any rake at all. Have you see the new newspaper that has come out, called the "i", in red with a font not too dissimilar to the Icon - any chance of sponsorship - 2 new products giving each other a boost?

Seems to me that it's an all round better national 12? any ideas of how it will compare to other boats on speed?

I wouldn't say it's " better" than a N12, but hopefully it will distinguish itself as an exceptional boat to sail. Performance, probably a bit slower around the track than a Merlin but quicker than a 200 - but speed is not the be all and end all with this boat. Consistent performance across a range of winds and courses and a truly rewarding boat to sail are the main aims.

Sounds like an ideal small pond boat! I hope it all goes well in the final stage & it's a very good looking boat.

I'm looking to put a website together for the Icon and I want it to be as good as the boat. If there are any potential Icon sailors out there who could help with the website design, I'm sure Mike would do you a discount on the boat.
![]() If anyone's interested in helping, drop me a pm.
Thanks,
Toby
