Does anyone's club have a solution to this that allows everyone to have a half-way fair race (as fair as normal PY racing, that is)

It's just as fair as normal PY racing, just a bigger difference.
Interesting to see Mr Craig's Merlin sailing has gone up a gear since last year!

When all is said and done, Belben and Lennon are deserving winners.

If you consider club racing, over a series of a dozen races (or more), on different days, on the same water = normal py racing then the BM is probably not quite as fair regarding the final results.

Well done to all who raced Clap

The only solution is to not try to do it and award foilers a class prize. they are so differant and so breeze and course dependant I don't think it's possible to handicap them fairly. Or even to get close.

Yeah ... those 30 points probably cost you a position in the top 200 ... Wacko

Well when you think about it- So 30 points is an extra 4   mins ahead of the 3 sails faster boats (the fact that this was supposedly the second fastest singlesail boat at the event is ridiculous!) , means I get cleaner air, with boats of a more similar speed.... lots of factors contribute to an overall better result

Seeing as a laser sailor a regularly beat (when racing lasers in class events) came 45th... I doubt a 200+ result accurately reflects my sailing! (Albeit it was the 2nd time in the Farr etc etc).

And as Rouge said who cares anyway? It's just a handicap event in a boat I don't normally sail!

Hopefully a class will become more established and the handicap will settle after a few more results to back it up.

I was OCS

Great days sailing though, apparently there were 302 registered. Fantastic effort by all at QMSC to make it run so smoothly.

Peaky

Well done anyway, if your Icon crew is only 3 months into a new sport then you did well enough indeed giving him a  big event to remember.   I bet not many novices got a ride there today ... and I presume you kept the mast dry ....  What heppened to your kicker ? ... and how come you were over the line ?! ... Don't tell me you thought you should have gone with the Merlins  ... Wink

I didn't want to give Nick Craig any more of a head start than I had to. I did dip back, but maybe you had to go round the end. Should have read the SI I suppose.
It was a pretty blustery day so I don't imagine there were too many people less experienced than Duncan out there, and yes no swims. About 45 mins in we were showing the Ospreys how to two sail reach when the kicker disconnected from the boom (no damage so I think the shackle just came undone). I had some spare dyneema in my pocket so we jury rigged a new kicker but couldn't get any tension on.
All good fun and pretty pleased despite the OCS.

Jimbo, not the handicap mate the course, we are PY'd to allow for a decent kite leg, there was only really one pal,  lots of tight reaching and just under 300 boats a lot of traffic.

Interesting the 100 didn't make it out...Something to do with being supplied with the wrong mast by RS (it was fresh out of the wraper) so we never got to compete against a like for like boat...

Don't forget that in last years marginal race I only managed 10th, the year before a Moth barely made the top 50 and the year before that I'm pretty sure we took the last 4 spots. It's not like we have it all our own way.
Jason is really very good, and has probably sailed more days this year than most people do in 5 years, He's also the current national champ and the three boats that followed him have all been sailing an awful lot this year...

I guess that's the problem with asymmetrics on RTC (and the reason I didn't bother to pack up for it last year!) Shame about the 100, although there's a good chance Tim LM (Rich's dad) will be at Draycote with his 100 for the Dash if it happens.

Steve did well in the 300 again- top 3 non-foiling singlehanders!
