Have a look at events like Chichester Federation week, about £40, (not big on fireballs but one or two that do quite well IIRC).

When is Falmouth Regatta week? could be some furballs getting in a bit of local practice, acclimatising to the St Austell Ale etc?

Nationals will always cost quite a bit, accomodation, travel, a week of eating out, plus clubs have to provide a good race team and expect to make a profit. Over £200 seems a bit fierce though. But it's a lot less than taking a flying fifteen or SB3 to Cowes Week.

Best to start with a couple of open meetings, 2 days can be enough to tell you whether your boat is up to it and if you fit in with the people.

Appreciate what you are saying but I'm not paying over the odds to go drinking with my mates...can do that any night!!!
I can live with the idea of watching Chips and Viv disappearing over the horizon and leaving me behind and with not winning anything, but I would like some honest competition. For that I would want to know that there will be at least a dozen "classic" boats for me to genuinely race against.
AND I'm not saying that the Fireball Class should change - if they just want to cater for the top end of the fleet that is their decision and I respect that...but as a back of the fleet sailor who would be genuinely interested in competing at a Nationals, they would have to reduce the price and tempt the average sailors into attending.

One of the problems is the top venues on the water cost are going through the roof. For 5 day championship some are talking of £120/150 per boat (double handed) for just the on the water charges, so this leave little for entertainment free drinks prizes etc. Its hard to please everybody and if CA take the fleet to cheaper venues is always a massive risk if the fleet will bother to travel. I agree the key is in the getting the silver/bronze fleets to travel for big turn outs.

We have a few events set up through out the champs for us and 600s which is including go kart racing on the sunday evening of our nationals which i think is a great idea for bringing the classes together and enjoy the sailing as well as the shore side events but after seeing the 600s enjoying the drinking at the last event it could be great fun for all.

Our nationals are at torbay a nice five to six hour drive for me and lads from broadstairs still at least they are over four days this year instead of the three the last few years
Retired now after 35 seasons in a row and time for a rest.

Thats £30 a day which isn`t to bad for a top venue 4 - 5 day event if you get decent parking, showers that work,decent launching & recovery, usually good / decent food & drink available.

Depending on where the venue I would go for that price & taking into account the extras take you may have to pay for like camping or B&B possible parking charges the extras may be the deal breaker.

If I am honest when I go for a one / two day event which is my perfered lenght of event,it usually costs me at the venue somewhere between £15 for a decent but friendly club & £30-35 for a more commercally minded business on top of the entry fee per day.

Considering the distances that I may travel to sail somewhere differant I am usual quite happy with those sort of prices,

In my experience most Class Associations aim to break even at National Championships, I have sat on a few committees and there has never been any talk of trying to make a profit, most recognise it's in the best interests of the class and the sailors to keep the event as low a cost as possible. This will of course vary according to the selected host club, some are more expensive than others.

I don't think so, just look at last years figures. I have always been surprised that Lasers are not producing 300+ per fleet at their major events.

The laser nationals keep clashing with international events which means the top guys can't attend.  Some people don't see the point in attending when the competion is lowered and for others its just too expensive.

There is also no social side to the laser nationals which spoils the week for a lot of people. 

Personally I'm not attending the nationals this year despite the venue being Mounts Bay as I want a holiday.

One of the ways to keep the costs down for the Nationals is to sail for less days. The 3 or 4 day weekend with 7+ races (as used by the Supernovas as mentioned in the OP, Phantoms and more recently with great success the N12s).

Personally I like that format - up to 4 races per day of up to 1hr, rather than the week long format with less time on the water each day.
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

part of the reason for the high cost of entry to the
fireball nationals is the high price being charged by
restronguet sailing club to use their outdated and small
facilities-how they get away with this i dont know!

I can agree with this... I have done 5 Laser nationals since 2001, and the social scene seems to have slowly diminished from the nationals. The first I did in 2001 at Paignton was good, the highlight being most of the fleet visiting some foam party in Torquay. Last year, again at Paignton I spent most evenings on my own in my B&B watching the telly as probably all but 10 of the entrants across all fleets werent old enough to get into pubs.

The Laser seems to be splitting into two fleets, the masters and the youths, with not much in between. From what I hear the master nationals/events are all brilliant but I am not old enough to go to them. When I go to qualifiers/nationals currently, at 31 I am probably one of the oldest there (and would probably still be if I was 21).
