The L2000 would certainly get round the average inland course quicker with a traditional kite, but that wasn't really the point of the boat...

Rick,

The Swift Solo was launched as a class after the year 2000. It is not a SMOD. The class is growing well and is owned by the members - not a manufacturer.

We need more classes like this to come along so that the sailors interests are protected not the manufacturers.

Laser 2000 without kite probably 1100+

Tasar with asymmetric probably 1000

Besides, what makes a boat nicest to sail (maybe with your girlfriend, maybe with your best mate who's not too hot a sailor) isn't necessarily what makes it fastest. There are loads of boat qualities that make sailing enjoyable (e.g. feel of the helm, handling, wave preformance), speed is just one of them.

Yes, Frank Bethwaite did some experimentation with an
Asymettric on a Tasar. His conclusion was that it
didn't work. His criteria of "working" was obviously a
lot tighter than that used by say the designer of the 2
tonner! Obviously a pole kite would work, given say a
Laser 2 size kite and pole, but that's not the point of
the boat.

Good point about the Swift Solo beoing a non smod one design of more recent ilk. Is she only home build, or are there builders out there building to order?

And to think that at the time of launching the Tasar (by Laser), the hype was that the boat was so quick that the apparent wind would be so far forward downwind that a kite would be redundant.

Maybe we need a new topic, 'SMOD hype through the ages'...

I must say I don't remember that, and I was paying
quite a lot of attention. In fact I hardly remember
sailing hot angles downwind being a topic at all back
then. It was a long time ago though, it could be my
memory at fault.
