Be a very different style of event though. Back in the 70s (and 60s I think), when there were a lot more active racing classes, there were several "one of a kind" or "two of a kind" events, which were pretty much that. Classes were invited to send one or two of their best sailors and all would race on handicap. They mostly died out in the 80s or 90s I think, Draycote Silver Salvers might have been the last. The big mass handicap events proved more popular. |

I just competed in the US event, I think I was in the unique position that I could have done both, but Mississippi won out over Burnham. The VX Ones were a very good platform for the event, all evenly matched with supplied sails and rigs fixed. It was some of the tightest racing I have ever done, with no speed differentials between boats. It was all how you started and sailed the race.
One similarity, the winners (also convincingly) was a full time 49er team putting in lots of hours on the water!

If your going down the keelboat route why not use the Squib. lots around locally to Burnham. Weight less of an issue.

So it's all about the helm in a two man boat?

may be a stupid idea, but what about keelboats?
Something like the king of cowes or the etchells invitational. SB3's? J70, Etchells? You just pile the weight on the side until you hit the limit, the topper champ can sail with 3 big guys, the Finn champ can sail with 2 etc. It would be more equalized than dinghy sailing, Fitness wouldn't be so critical etc. Plus with 3 or 4 man crew there is opportunity to take 2nd place at the nats as well or inland champions etc. Problem would be that it would probably have to leave BOC |

there-in lies the problem - this is private invitational owned by the RCYC. The RYA, dinghy sailors league, crews union, sea scouts, ISAF, international foiling kite class and Sailing Anarchy YC have naff all to do with it. I guess they've considered PY BYOB.... I guess they rightly dismissed it as PY is total joke. I guess they've considered keelboats.... the best dragons are built nigh-on on site, but I doubt anyone would loan them out to bunch of dinghy sailors, even 'good ones'. I would imagine its aspirational to maintain double-handers, I think it would be shame to lose the teamsmanship from the contest. There aren't too many options really... RS Quest would be good one. If the two of you are 25 stone and its being sailed in RS200s... And it may also be that the forward hand doesn't fancy a weekend's ditch crawling. |

I also guess that the Burnham Icicle was RCYC's answer to a Champion of Champions PY Event, back in the day you had to be invited for this too ... I guess that Burnham is not quite the epicentre that it was ... don't think the Cadets go there anymore and Burnham Week is not as high profile

it's certainly not as high profile - even on the East Coast scene it got eclipsed by Ramsgate Week when I lived over that way 20 years ago now.
I had a couple of fun Burnham Weeks in my first Laser, but I'd be lying to say the sailing location was great... with limited time now, I can't ever imagine ever wanting to go back on a nostalgic trip that's for sure. There were better regatta weeks - locally and further afield.
