Male or female Radial sailors? I'm quite sure the best weight will be different. Its very counter intuitive, but neverless the case. Its because, in a weight sensitive boat sailed without handicaps, there are considerable advantages in being at the mean weight for the fleet, not the weight that might make for the lowest total finish times.

Quite right - relative weight is also important, as you wouldn't want to be an outlier if your plan was to be a competitive all rounder.   The men's fleet is slightly heavier than the women's.  I'd guess that the average weight in the women's top 10 is about 70-72kg.

N'h don't listen to me, I sail a Solo which clearly means something within the context of this thread (not sure what, but I'll feign knowledge to not look like a moron)

As for competitive weights, (for women, that's this thread innit) I'd say the medals at the last Olympics is a good indicator, of course we are to assume the Beep has inaccurately reported the athletes credentials, besides you stood next to them, which is a far better mode of assessment than the Olympic medical.

Finally 'self esteem' issues... Hmm there's something rather amusing about a bloke getting all defensive when he compares his build to female laser sailors, stopping a smigeon short of calling them a bunch of biffas....

Hilarious!  Why do you think that data comes from medical assessments?  Loving the addition of some sexism too, nice touch mate.

There are sailors in that fleet whose weights I *know*. One of them is 63 Kg.  She is very small when stood next to the girls in the top 10.  Another is 74Kg.  She is slightly larger than the average in the top 10.

But anyway, you carry on, I'm sure you're having fun.  Please don't be offended if I don't respond to you further though.

Men have a higher cog than women so a woman would need to be either taller or heavier than a man to achieve the same righting moment.

Thank you very much for that chunk of animosity. It presumably makes my point however I do wonder who 'bustinben' is and how he seems privy to such information. He also implies that official? records have been misinterpreted. Should this be the case then why? Are top sports people vain about their vital statistics?

To support my personal cause I would like to believe him but not without more detail and a degree of verification.

Okay, I'm confused easily done I know, but you're basically saying that these numbers are phoney?  Why would that be?  Taking the Silver medalist's claimed details, that puts her bang in the middle of healthy on the NHS BMI chart.... so Id say that was 'normal'. But you are claiming they are actually overweight and under-declaring body weight...  you best write to the Daily Mail- they haven't had a good sailing scandal since Dempsey was seen out on the town with Ms Mills.

There is no quoted source for the data, but as far as I know, the weights/heights etc are merely taken from what is written on a form - I'm not saying there's any conspiracy (why would there be?), just that the data doesn't seem right based on what I know.   I'm not going to post personally identifiable information about myself or others on a public forum, but if you want to PM me I'll tell you what you want to know.

So in your opinion, the data published by the BBC is flawed, however you have nothing to offer in support of that?

Anyway, reason for clarity is very simple, I find it very depressing that despite rising to the very top of an egalitarian sport like sailing, we are still here discussing these women's weight, size and body shape.  It's a bit pathetic.

It would be hypocritical of me to say don't bag the knee wrecker, (although BB I don't get that's what you're doing, but it is the opening gambit of this thread).  However to use body types as somehow 'not normal' (Amazonian was phrase used) to demonstrate that the boat is somehow flawed is not right, and insulting to the women at the top of our game.  Then to discredit the evidence in the public domain, with nothing concrete, just opinion, seems to me to be adding unnecessary baggage to an already weak discussion.
