Today started off as a Blazing day, but as the Dancing Farmer had a slight 'equipment issue' after the morning race we took '04' out for a blast this afternoon.

The wind was 16 gusting 25 knots and we were well overpowered in the gusts, with about 160kg combined weight.  But it was really easy to manage, and once slightly off the wind the boat went like a rocket.  2:1 mainsheet was remarkably light, but 1:1 jib needed cleating.

Huge grins all round, if only it had been a bit less arctic...........

Hi Mike

Understand the CA are organising some open 'try an Icon' open days soon .... any dates / locations set up yet ?  If it fits Cirrus can make sure '03' and '10' are also available.  I'm sure Rodney will be able to add to the number as well.

iCON Class association.
Question to Mike L ... Training is planned for the home club .... but the iCON hasn't been on the circuit this year. What is happening to UK wide marketing and planning to get boats together at events.
I see elsewhere that you are planning yet another new boat ... Will you be concentrating on developing this and leaving sales to Suntouched?  Also is the Class association getting involved in marketing ... I see they are planning demo weekends in the South how does this work?
I have people thinking about buying an iCON but they are confused by the diversion of efforts. Time for a statement on what the plans are for marketing, CA and events in the UK
if you'd prefer ... Pm me, but it'd be best to start a clear marketing and PR effort for the UK before the season goes too far.
I'd vote for The Lord Birkett as one "iCON" events what do other iCON and potential iCON owners think?

Light airs race today .... Sailed off 1000 and got two bullets against mixed bag of boats Lasaer, rs200, RS 100, Stealth cat, Solo, Tooper etc.... went round the course faster than the RS100. Conditions zero to 8kts. Kept weight much further forward and sailed with traveller centred (tied in place). 26.5 stone on board.
Next task is rig set up, what rake is anyone using? What rig tension - currently quite soft with 15 on the loos gauge.
As ever the boat was really sweet upwind and was interesting to see how useful the dangly pole can be.

Good day on the water ....

Hi ScotsFinn

Sounds like you are getting to grips with the boat ... Look forward to hearing more as time passes.

The point you raise about the class association maybe could do with a bit of clarification.  Devoti have a wide ranging agreement with us at Cirrus that in summary means they are currently making all Icons at their factory in Poland under licence agreement- they market them via their existing channels and they now also supply Cirrus with Icons.  Furthermore they exclusively market and distribute the boat throughout continental Europe but this excludes the UK and Ireland where Cirrus' (who developed Icon and built the early boats), not surprisingly have retained full exclusive rights.

The CA is totally independent of both Devoti and Cirrus  - and while they are not involved in commercially supplying Icon they will of course promote the boat to be great benefit of both early owners and prospective owners.  CA's are usually more effective than many commercial suppliers imo as they actively race the boats themselves, know exactly what makes them 'go', develop tips build a network of informal trainers, organise formal training events and boat trials etc etc

They are now working with some early owners to run a number of 'try an Icon' days based at clubs around the UK.  Mike Bell, their first secretary, is running the first of these at his home club, Burghfield SC.  This is a good 'central southern' location with excellent facilities that has in the past been used by manufacturers such as RS  for demo's and training.  The CA have invited Cirrus to put in our 2 demo boats and to support the event(s) directly - we are of course very happy to get fully involved in this and later events.

We understand that Suntouched have also been invited by the CA to attend this first day although there is only to date an informal arrangement for them to sell Icon in the UK in parallel to Cirrus (because of their historical links to Devoti).  The CA hopes they can also see advantage in supporting these events and building the CA relationship.  The intention is that they, and possibly in time other 3rd party agents,  can benefit from the experience and knowledge of existing owners and the boats developers as and when relevant.

Well I would like these photos of course – one of the current batch coming to the UK soon!

We are supporting the CA at the Burghfield SC Open Day on 18th May.  We/They are supplying at least 3 or 4 Icons and running a bit of a light hearted competition... only those who have not yet stepped in an Icon are allowed to formally enter ... you can guess at the nature of the competition in the title "Wanna-be stars in the reasonable priced Icon"  ... Yes complete with white board 'board of fame' you to can have 20 minutes practice and then do a simple 1 lap timed circuit.  Fastest times get a prize - simple really.  Open to Burgfield’s own local curmudgeons and visitors alike.  We’ll try and sort out a ‘Sailing Stig’  as well... Come along and have a go as they say .....

Mike, is the stripe painted on, a sticker, or pigmented gel-coat?
