does it matter if the boat is made marginally faster? its not as if a new hole in the rudder costs much, if anything to create, but it would make the whole boat more user friendly, likewise with the taping of the rear corners. i don't think anyone really thinks that a successful class could be made by giving the hull carbon spars and a fathead main. there are other boats that do that kind of thing well, but a laser could be so much nicer, but still a laser.

Less annoying = easier to sail = faster.

The XD controls are a case in point. Easier to get better control of sail shape - therefore faster.

Not according to there PY, they've got slower on PY since getting XD Wink
My gripe with Lasers is just that they are a pain in the arse to rig.  A simple round mast with track & halyard, plus same sail but with bolt rope instead of sleeve would make the laser much more convenient to own.

Or just run a zip up the luff tube... Having a zip in there would go someway to justifying the bloody price tag.

The potential speed of the boat has not changed (just ask Scheidt who continued to use a 'classic' kicker rather than the XD kicker). What has changed is that the boat is not such a handful on certain maneuvers such as rounding up from a reach or run to close hauled when it is windy because you can effectively get the sail controls set which you could not do pre XD.

It does make is easier for Mr John Q Clubsailor which make him go faster....

As for the PY comment the Laser is a good 'average' boat but one that rarely excels in any given conditions hence why you rarely see one near the front at a major event.

But not actual enough extra speed to make the boats feel much different, just enough extra speed to mean you have to spend the money. And a thorough pain in the neck to rig (although admittedly not as bad as the ridiculous "what were they thinking not to ban them) arrengements of loops and knots and eyes that preceded them). And destroy sails and topmasts.

I've noticed a huge difference in my ability to sail a Laser. Being far too short and somewhat on the light side, I found the old kicker just wouldn't depower enough, and I couldn't get the old cunningham on enough to stop me being stuck in irons in a blow. Barely used the cats cradle mess they had for years, but jumped in an XD rigged boat when doing some training a few years ago, and was amazed at the difference.

This is hilarious!  Let's change the laser (one of the most successful classes of all time) by adding features from classes that by laser standards are massively un-successful.

Excellent plan!

The fact is, if you don't know why the laser is so successful you should admit you're not in a position to make suggestions on how it could be improved.

Oh come on! What a good and successful car the Morris Minor was, over 1,000.000 sold......why did they ever change it?

There's an old saying "rats breed faster than race-horses".
Best wishes from deep in the woods

They didn't, it was superseded by other cars that people wanted more.

That hasn't happened with the laser.

And how is a car in any way a good analogy for a small dinghy used for racing?

really... I'd have thought it was discontinued and a newer product brought to market to replace it proactively.  Sure, you need demand, but demand needn't be passive or latent as seems to be the case in dinghydom.
