I've never found gunwhales need steaming.
I'm afraid I tend to the easy but safe route, and just screw them on using steel screws, then remove the screws and fill when the epoxy has cured. I tend to cap gunwhales with a very thin layer of hardwood, so microballoons make for a bearable colour in the holes. No doubt a craftsman would fill the holes with plugs made of matching timber...

Don't steam bend sycomore, as it can give it a grey tinge which really isn't very nice. You should be able to mould it round in one bit as doesn't really need to be thicker than 10mm. If you want it thicker then do two strips, one on top of the other. A pro boat builder also recently told me not to epoxy sycamore as it makes it yellow off. If you want to epoxy the decks put tape over the Gunwhales first , epoxy the deck, then finish it all off in single pack varnish.

Some of you may remember I am also building one- though the blog has been very quiet recently.

Anyway, this rain has brought with it alot of flooding, leaving my workshop in a foot of water, ruining most of materials and tools, as well as my current progress. I am going down tomorrow to see what I can salvage, but after a quick recce today, I am not too hopeful......

The only things that seem to have survived are the building plans (thank god) and a brand new 49er spinnaker, which was on box that floated. Everything else is f****ed

Oh no Piers, I'm gutted for you.
I've had to keep bailing my leaky building shed but that's nothing compared to this.
That's a lot of time and money gone
Very sad

As it turns out the building plans are lost aswell, having been back in the daylight. Anyway, some photos...

Before
After

The reason you can't see a boat in either of those is the first picture was before I started building and the second after I had tried to salvage what I could.

What a shame mate, how far had you got with the build prior to the flood?
