Hang on.  I never said it should be sheeted onto the centreline Simon.  I am many things but not a complete Noob, i know how a rig works pretty well thanks very much.  However the boom is well out over the gunwale and the boat above 'Her' is sailing at a much higher angle.  So in my opinion it doesnt look like a traditional 'Upwind' video.  There are very few classes (if any) where a boom spending more time over the Gunwale is classed as upwind.  The D-one (a boat as you know i spent nearly 4 years sailing) sails with the boom in most conditons on the gunwale.  It may drop further onto the wing in big winds.  But even then its a very powerful boat and the toss up between VMG is questionable.

I am not questioning this ladies sailing technique whatsover, just what you are claming is upwind in the video.  As frankly in my opinion its not.  The later footage of the 5 however is!

How would you know? You keep reminding us you haven't sailed the boat.

The difference in the angles in the video looks no more and probably less than I would expect between me as a heavy 300 sailor who likes to foot, and a lightweight who needs to stuff....but I can't really know 'cos I haven't sailed it either.

I can tell you that the *eros and the 2000 were pretty much level paced upwind in a F4 club racing 2 weeks ago.  Both *eros pointed higher than the 2000, but went slower.  Inconclusive which of the *eros pointed higher: different sailors were in different modes.

That's your opinion and it's just as valid as mine Matt, but obviously you have a problem with me that you need to be so agressive in your responses.

Way to go tough guy!

No aggression there - just calling you.  And putting my own observations in context.

'calling someone' is actually when you disprove what they are saying. Yet all you have done is offer a differing opinion.  So no you have not 'called me out' you have just made several personal attacks and shown your true colours.  Well done, give yourself a big tick in that big red pen of yours

(also call someone out on somethingcall someone on something) North American Drawcritical attention to someone’s unacceptable actions or behaviour:
people were calling him out for his negative commentsDan had called her out on a couple of contradictions in her storyshe called him on his claim that the media were doing a bad job of covering the economy

Yahoo Answers:

If you "call someone out" it means basically that you make that person aware that you are 'on to them' about a certain issue. Most likely you'd do it in front of others.

For instance, if your friend lies repeatedly about a situation but thinks that no one knows and you say in front of her and all your friends "Hey Jenny, we all know you've been lying about dating Jimmy."

You have the second of the Yahoo answers interpretations, I have the first interpretation and the first of the Yahoo ones.  Can't disprove your opinion.  So where do I think I am 'on to you', where am I drawing critical attention to you: the technique you are using, conscious or not, to make a disparaging comment and then disown it with the, 'but I haven't sailed the boat'.

Equally I was 'on to you' in that you identified yourself by deciding that my comment about new singlehanders was aimed at you.

And maybe what we are actually having is a duel in the good old fashioned sense of 'call you out',

Thanks for posting that, it proves that by definition I am right.

So me calling you out like perhaps... You have hidden agendas like family that perhaps help run the rs association?  Therefore your attempts to belittle me are filled with conflict of interest.

No belittling.  Just challenging.

Glad you've come out with it what you think the hidden agenda is.

Clare does indeed work for the RS CA.

Is that influencing my posts.  No.

Take it or leave it.

Well again we will agree to disagree...pretty good reason to have an agenda Matt.

Anyway, please post something constructive.  Like maybe talking about the eps and 300 debacle that rocked the very foundations of the dinghy world.  Please, this place has so many people trying to stop people having an opinion but no one that actually wants to start a thread.

What's even more amazing is that Simon as the main aero fanbouy and I as the main zero fanbouy seem to be able and happy to challenge each other on a mature level.  But you with no agenda seem to want to try and give me a cyber roughing up.  Well big boy, I won't be bullied by anyone.  Especially you.

I don't care whether one 'Ero performs optimally upwind with different boom angle to the other 'Ero, or the boom vertical angle differs (unless clearance for tacking is significantly compromised), or whether sail cloths differ unless longevity significantly compromised. If class racing then relative performance is irrelevant; if handicap racing then the handicap will (eventually) reflect significant performance differences, albeit subject to the boat's suitability for local conditions.

I do care about sailing characteristics though, whether the boat is responsive (fun to sail) without excessive instability/effort for the more occasional sailor, but won't know that until sailors with time in the 'Eros give some unbiased (!) feedback.

So time for a truce chaps?

Koops, it's not about the aero and the zero mate.  But for what it's worth you are right.  Matt obviously has a personal issue with me.  Still I am sure mark or mags will tidy this up shortly and we can go back to normal service

I get so confused by all this, is it sailing politics? I just race boats, badly, I admit. If I indulged in all this stuff would it make me a better sailor? I doubt it. Bickering, my kids used to do that and got slapped wrists because it was so boring and got no one anywhere.

Tick,

I'll consider myself slapped.

I guess I'd had enough of the negative campaigning.  Better get used to it given there are 6 months to go, and we've just had the Autumn Statement!
