Testing? Getting it right? Deciding if there was a market at all? Unlike boards, there is expected to be longevity in the life of a dinghy class, not a new model brought out the following year, like in windsurfing, so a couple of extra months development are worthwhile to get a product that people want to buy, and actually enjoy using.

Quite, The Asbo didn't exactly happen overnight either.

I've absolutely no interest in this spinnaker-less waste of good water space, but I'm intrigued as to just why it's been going on so long, why does it take this time?

That confirms that ICON has a great future  ... the endorsement we never considered .... Wink

Testing? Getting it right? That's one or two weeks, what happened to the ten months.

Anyone would think a complete remould and change of builder had taken place three times over..

Testing in one or two weeks?!  You're all about the quality then!

The boats I work on for a living take 20 years to come to fruition!

Too many boats are rushed to market and not fully tested or developed. You should probably take another 6 months after first boats are produced sailing and sailing, changing and changing back, getting a few more opinions. I suspect it takes at least two years to resolve a boat completely and sort out consistent manufacture. Far better to make sure it absolutely meets its brief before selling to the public.

Not sure why he square corners are there? What do they add? wouldn't a smooth curve be easier on the eye?

Presumably the square corners are max beam.
If you rounded it off, you would lose righting moment anywhere away from the widest point.
Mr Turners latest Merlin is parallel sided for most of its length I think!

Interestingly there is some contradiction re print-through in the above link vs. the 49er one I posted earlier.

Apologies for hijacking the thread, I wasn't trying to make a point re material choice, just posting some info.

I understand people's points about max beam, but (a) fairing it into a curve could be done (if desired) with negligible loss of righting moment, and (b) if more righting moment is faster and speed is everything then you should be suggesting increasing the beam!

Personally I like the corners. The hull looks different to anything else out there right now and is a refreshing change.

If I had the cash and a suitable crew I would definitely be looking at one of these.

Having found towing a Merlin quite stressful, not to mention the comedy of getting one into a standard garage door, I feel the 2 metre beam of the RS400 is about optimum!

I quite like the look of the Icon, not ready to give up kites yet though!
