No it's just an apparent boat.

Apparent with everyone else but me.

Im not an expert but certainly felt like it in 15 - 20k yesterday ! Making any
sort of reach in these conditions is a non starter and you quickly end up
bearing away to a very deep angle indeed.

GRF - think yours is an 'apparition boat' !!!

Keith,

like the man wearing orthopeadic shoes, I stand to be corrected (!) but
my understanding is that the rig is effectively unstayed with the stays
only there to resist the kite from driving the mast forward going
downwind.

In terms of 'pre-bend' its quite scary the effect the kicker has on the
mast
bend ! My initial reaction was that in a breeze I was not going well
upwind (not just due to lack of full-on hiking fitness), pulling on the
outhaul flattened the sail and it felt a lot better.

Probably going to get the smaller sail as well as at 13.5 st, contrary to
expectations, I am clearly marginal for the big sail in any sort of breeze.

Well had my first outing today.
F3 with the small rig.
For a first sail it felt good with the setup of the boat
well thought through making life easier.

I was getting overpowered in the top end of a F3 and
ended up raking the mast back more.
I'm 6ft and 82 Kgs so on a first sail I'm happy I opted
for the small rig!

Unlike some other earlier posts, I did have a few issues
with rigging. Only minor things but worth noting for
future. Key ones of these are :
1. As someone else has mentioned, it seems that the
shrouds do have a right way round but there is no way of
telling other than by trial end error
2. My heel plug (mast foot) dropped off as I was dropping
the mast in and I had to remove the gate organiser to
fish it out. A bit of tape around the edge of it solved
it
3. Getting the boom bolt through took a bit of lining up
and faffing!
4. The gnav bars were an interference fit with the mast
so I had to slacken the roller bolt to open the gap up.
5. Putting sail numbers on. Not a major one, but if you
follow the provided instructions, you have to squeeze the
numbers/letters (GBR) up to fit them all on without them
also going onto the dacron luff. Putting them a bit lower
down between the first and second batten would give more
room (photos to follow)

I had a fleet of lasers out to play with so, whilst
trying not to interfere with their racing, I did sail
around them to judge speed. The 100 seems slightly
quicker upwind and a whole lot quicker downwind - no
surprises there really!

There great to sail and you can tell in a breeze that
they'll fly downwind.

Agree with others that it's easy to stall the main upwind
so main/kicker tension is going to be key. I think I am
going to play with the traveller strop height as the gap
between traveller & boom when sheeted in feels too big
currently.
With the kite up in the top end of a F3 I tried heading
up and you very quickly get overpowered so running angles
in any breeze won't be very big!

I remembered to tie bigger knots in the toe straps so
early swim avoided!

Do make sure you tighten all shackles and bolts / bolt
covers.

It does feel that the main sheet cleats too readily so I
will need to raise the ratchet.

I got a rescue boat to take some photos so I'll post a
link to these once I can find out who took them!

Back out again over Easter with my first racing and then
it's getting the practice in before the other Parkstone
guys get theirs!

Hi Phil,

Sounds like we had some shared experiences.

My mast base too fell off into the bottom of the recess - took 30 minutes
with sticky tape on the end of the tiller extension to extract it ! Good job I
did too as found a rouge screw in there as well.

Had to slacken off the clamping bolt on the gnav arm - was basically
wedged onto the mast and couldn't be moved until we undid the bolt -
trashed the SELDEN sticker on the mast in about 20 seconds !!

Im relieved that everybody seems to be finding that the smaller sail is fine
in any sort of breeze - initially thought it was a girlies sail but quickly
realised I am going to need one.

Seems like quite a few of us, apart from GRF of course, got our first
outing this weekend.

First outing.
My comment about the sail numbers is that, even with two
1's in my sail number it was a squeeze and I think they'll
look naff spread over the dacron so sticking them lower
down seems like a sensible option

Similar issues here with the Sail numbers and with the gnav trashing
the Selden stickers onthe mast. But I was warned to tape the mast
foot in place so that was OK. Has anyone else thought of putting a
small shackle onthe outhall so you don't have to tie and untie the knot
inside the boom?

Hi Dave,

Good to met you on Friday, although only briefly - they are clearly pretty
busy at RS !! Took me 4 hours to drive the 100 miles home !

Not attempted the sail numbers yet (looks so nice without them) !

If I remember rightly Charlie did say about taping on the mastfoot - but
seem to have forgotten in the frenzy to get on the water.

Yes, going to get a Laser type outhaul hook and same for cunningham -
tying knots everytime out is a non-starter for me.

Cheers

Chris

If you are going to start putting hooks on make sure they are within you class rules as you dont want to make all that effort then have to take it off at you first event.

Also stalling upwind is a common problem with the vareo which is very much similar as using the correct ammount of kicker, cunningham and foot in sail helps also if you dont keep it flat you will go side ways quickly i would think the 100 is the same also try and keep the bow down by not sitting too far back as this also increases your water line lengh helping you go upwind better.

This is how i sail my vareo so these are my views on it.Hope it helps
