Jesus, 78 boats! How the big turnover? You'd have thought there would be saturation after all these years!
I love proper one design action like little else, but the little gathering on broxbourne the other weekend shows that - as Roger says - you can have loads of fun racing boat on boat in diff classes. Especially at club level where disparity in ability and boat condition render class racing something of a misnomer.
This holds true unless maybe you are significantly quicker or slower than all the other boats.
TBH I don't see that as being any different to what a lot of us - me included - enjoy at our clubs week in week out.

The one thing I like about Solos most is that it always seems to be really windy when they're sailed, all of the pictures you see show them on screaming reaches and runs, never floating around aimlessly.

Is decent wind part of an upgrade package you get from the manufacturers?

Successfully confusing ambition with ability since 1980.

There's just so many around, no need to flood the internet with the dross images?

and it was great fun, it was only after the event that I even thought about what the result was, (and that was to only answer a domestic question about what I'd been up to at the weekend LOL)

however, I can assure you the vibe, atmosphere and nature of the sailing (close racing, boat on boat) is not replicated on average laps against anything from 49ers to RS Teras.  And the competitive element is a joke... e.g. so crap, not worth bothering with.  By the end of series I was half way up the pecking order, despite coming last on every race I competed in- both on handicap and across the water! (using a Kona longboard, before I paint myself as even more of a muppet than I really am  LOL)

I would think the age of the average solo sailor would mean that pumping and rocking would be jumped on hard at opens or have I got that wrong. not seen a MPS or RS700 pump so left all that crap behind long ago, even at the front of the fleet. I stoped going to laser qualifiers years ago as they just pumped all the way round, or was the last post  just a wind up for some fun ? I would think some of the top sailors would push the rules and I remember a solo open when they role tacked every ten yards Shocked

From my experience there is a LOT of rocking from the old boys! It was one of the things that made me get rid of mine...
