What Boat?

Still reckon Mustang 30 is the best bet for everything that is wanting to be done with the boat

From a personal point of view I just like the Mustang 30 overall, saying that though we've had a very successful Laser 28 race out of our club. Don't think you could go too wrong with either boats.

Yes SF but there is a pile of laser 28s in poole and they are proper planing machines- wolves in sheeps clothing. The interior is a good deal nicer than the mustang too.


Forgot all about a slightly bigger boat which is far superior as a real racing yachtsman boat which is now in your price band and crews six with berths for all.

Namely, have you considered the X99? Fantastic boat, not an old tub like the sig 33. Great off wind and uphill too. Pity there aren't more in the UK but they did have some OD racing in the past.

 People say it is a technical boat to sail, but really it just has a tuneable rig where the kicker actually works to bend the mast (unlike the kemp trunk on the sigma 33) an runners are an added interest, not a pain in the backside.




Have a look over the j92 or even Projection 920 if you are considering finance based on a decent deposit and using some of your capital for new sails and running. I believe resale values have stabilised. Both are good alround fast racer-sleepers

The mustang certainly surfs readily, but I would dispute actual planing having seen one on almost flat water doing less than 10knts in force 6.

There were plenty impalas and laser 28s in poole for OD racing, but the more technical (if you can't do runners and reefs the mast will break-not that technical really) X99 has maybe died as OD in the UK. (i await contradiction)

here's some experiences -

Sailing an impala with a short-reached sea we could not effectively surf one day, and we ploughed a waterline wave which just got deeper and scarier. Meanwhile the laser 28 we had pinned up wind came past us and told us laterr that they did 14,7 with no drama..

Sailing a hunter 707 we left a mustang standing with a reasonable 4 ft swell. It is such a stable planing machine that i had time to look around and the half tonners and sig 33 actually appeared to be going backward!!! Pity hunter never did the big 707 at 8 to 9 m.

If planing means exceeding hull speed continuously, a Mustang 30 will certainly do that; I have done whole downwind legs in a Mustang never going below 10 knots, and perfectly well behaved; no roll at all. On another note I have been in an X99 when the mast came down for no reason at all; they are fairly tricky boats to sail and can come up with nasty surprises off the wind at speed. They are also considerably more expensive to keep competitive than a Laser or a Mustang. Has Mike bought his new boat yet? This discussion started some months ago.
