All the sailors at the nationals can have as much social as they want, all you have to do is help in booking whatever you want to do. Its hard work to get people to commit and put their hand in thieir pocket.

Pre-entries for the Scorpion nationals are now up to 83 with two weeks still to go.  The class has actively promoted the event at Looe and prides itself on a good social programme to complement the racing.

My point being that I paid £250 for my Fireball (and I'm very happy with it too) and it is a great boat for the lake I sail on....but I can't justify spending that much for an event, however much I would like to go. There are plenty of old Fireballs out there priced at around the £500 mark and I can't imagine many of them will be there too. If there is little point going for the serious racing (my boat isn't and never will be competitive) then you are left with the social side and racing against similarly uncompetitive boats...and at this price I can't imagine there will be too many uncompetitve boats like mine in the fleet.
If the event was £50, I would be there like a shot, (and I suspect other owners who) wouldn't mind  not finishing in the top half of the fleet but just having a good time and enjoying the event.

So, is there a case for reduced fees if your boat is over 15 years old?  Might as well encourage turnout.

At that price LarFin seems to have a point. Perhaps reductions for students/pensioners  would encourage numbers. Also an old boat prize?  With so many old rotting fireballs out there how about a prize for the most horrible/lethal boat.

But I suspect, judging by the programme I saw, a very large chunk of what you ar paying for *is* the social side...
