Mine, barely lost anything putting my parents on there .. Infact, a few quotes were higher! Even will full protected no claims of 5+ years and no claims ever! Turns out half the cost is actually the area I live in! (Still in the region of £1700 though .. But thats fully comp!) But as said, it can't hurt to try. You can also try for a "low mileage" pricing .. Under 6999 miles (iirc) is classed as low mileage, and can often lower it a little bit. Don't lie to insurers though, they know all ...

I just spent 4 months insured on a 2.8lr Volvo XC70 though .. Didn't cost me a penny! (Not bad when you've been driving for 6 months and you're asked if you can do a few hundred miles in it ... ) Lovely cars to drive .. And I'm now saving for one!

Do your pass plus.  It cost about £120, but acts as a year no claims.

Get one of your parents to be the owner of the car, then add you as a named driver.  It was the only way my brother could afford to insurance his car [mark iv 1.9tdi golf]

Be very careful with the parents owning, you as named driver thing. You will find that somewhere in the proposal form, whether online or paper, it will ask the question "who will be the main driver of the vehicle", or words to that effect. If you lie, you will not be covered should anything happen. There are many ways they can find out if you're lying, for instance if your parents both have insurance on another car, and you have none, it would be reasonable for them to suppose that you're the driver.

In the end, if you can't afford insurance on an honest basis, you can't afford to have a car. Simples! Try buying an 850 Mini like all us crusties had to! Mine towed my Fireball - just! - and was incredibly cheap to run.

In the end, if you want a posh German motor as your first car, you really should pay the insurance without lying and without whinging. We're none of us entitled to this stuff.

Insurance companies are great at taking money but not giving it back, if they ever ask the value of the car ask them the same question as if you do claim you never get the value they charge premium for.

also moot point which will never change all these new anti discrimnation laws dont apply to insurance.

problem is all the comments in this thread highlight why so many dont have insurance because it is expensive. but thats not an excuse. any buy a pants car for tootling around in pay fully comp earn no claims and ask to use your parents car when you need to tow the boat.

Car insurance is expensive for young make drivers because they are by far and away the biggest risk, the fact that the policy is more then the car is worth is completely irrelevant, its the cost of the damage to the third party that is where the biggest risk lies.  Unfortunately whatever you buy you will have to just put up with the payment, its the last 30 years of poor driving by other young drivers that your paying for.  Its going to be the same for  a few years and thats the facts!  In terms of insurance companies valuation of the vehicle, they will value the vehicle at current trade price at the time of the claim.  the insurance company will not pay out for dealer profit margin hence why what they pay and the amount to replace is usually about £1500 different (its the dealers margin)  There are products in the market place such as GAP or VRI (vehicle replacement insurance) which in essence upgrade your policy to a new for old type, but this is usually restricted to newer cars, these policies usually cost about £300 and last for 3 years.

Going back to the original question, I think it is a mistake to buy a car solely based on whether you can sleep in it at events. Assuming you have a busy circuit, that still can't be more than one event a month from April to October, and for the rest of the year, and during the week you're stuck with something that is big, thirsty and costly to insure, plus I can't imagine you really want a Volvo estate at 18!

I had a camper van for a while but got rid of it for that reason, Ross's suggestion of a smaller more practical car and spend what you've saved on B&B's is a very sensible one. You'll be grateful of a good nights sleep when you line up for the first race on Sunday alongside someone who spent the night with the handbrake digging into their back, freezing cold and woken up at 6am when the sun came up!

i am currently now towing with a 1.2 N reg vauxhall corsa after smashing my golf 1.8 on the way to sailing .

To be honest, for the ammount of time you will be in need of a b&b or somewhere to sleep at events you would be better off with a smaller car and paying for cheaper insurance and buy yourself a £30 tent and camp.

i own a 1.6  petrol, focus, costs 1300 to insure fully comp with me as owner and main driver  im 17 and have been driving for 8 months now. itl go down to aboutt 950 to insure it next year.

it cost £3500 53 reg. and only had 35k miles on it.

can just about sleep in the back and im pretty tall. but still think a tent is the best option.
itl do 40mpg and itl tow a b14 double stacker easy. and its towed 3 200's recently without too much of a struggle

Does the Focus towing weight allow you to tow 3 RS200's?

I know I can't to tow that number of boats as I'll be over my towing limits.
