I think a National 12 would be a very sensible starting point for a 12 foot long assymetric dinghy. Mainly because it has 70 years of development behind it.

Its sub planing performance is considerably better too, and as a hiker would spend more time in displacement mode it makes much more sense.

yes the cherab is too high preformance and at least if your coming off something like the merlin or a smaller assy and go onto the assy 12 you you wont kill yourself

I think thats a little unfair here. The fact is we are talking about building a 12ft dinghy with an asymetric. The cherub hapens to be a 12ft dinghy with an assymetric... comparisons are going to be drawn.

the cherub, however, is a twin wire monster built of carbon and will, whereas an assymetric 12 would be more like a big, better feva (has anyone realised fevas are 12 ft long with an assymetric?)

600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it.

Im sure i read in past that the reason the N12 and Merlins did not work with an assy kite was because the C/B was in the wrong posistion. My own experence of puting assamertic kites on other boat (470 and a Bullet) would suggest that its not just a case of adding the right bits, but that hulls need to be re designed. Having said that Im in the process of rebuilding a 80's 12 and might consider retro fitting a kite anythoughts?

Feva are good teaching boats shame about build quality.

Cherubs have never needed major changes when converting to sprit kites, but then then had a nine foot spinnaker pole so the change was less extreme than for the boats you mention.

Putting an asymettric on a twelve does seem a bit pointless though. They don'ty work well on slow boats, and if you're going to make so many changes as to convert it to a fast boat you might as well have an older spec Cherub which will do the job far better.

Alas that is the problem, who wants a kite that helps you go along??  If a kite is going to be fitted it should make the boat Take Off!!
