A 2 week old mast breaking on a capsize?? I would have been straight back to the manufacturer as it is clearly not fit for purpose and should have been covered under warranty.

I don't know if you are a bit simple or trolling me; either way I probably shouldn't bother replying but here goes ...

IF it had been a manufacturing defect I would not have made a claim ... it wasn't.

During the capsize, which was caused by a port tack keelboat refusing to give way, the boat inverted and the mast dug in the seabed; as it was 20 - 25 knots and a decent swell the mast was compressed by the hull during a trough and the spar snapped.

In my opinion in this case Noble didn't live up to their reputation or their advertising claims ... I was very disappointed by their performance.

I had insured with them for years and had a near perfect claims history; I thought their response was shabby.

Not sure it is actually. If you can't tie your boat down to a decent anchorage you should take the mast down if you want to pay the same insurance rates as the rest of us who do tie the boats down properly. Otherwise the rest of us are subsidising you.

The club is the members, so if you point the finger at the club for not providing ground anchors then you are just pointing the finger at yourself.

You only need to google winter series to work out who the insurer might be. ;)

Of course, but why the need to be mysterious in the first place?

That's a bit harsh if that was pointed at me.  Tying boats down to trolleys in our part of the dinghy park is common practice as it is almost impossible to get anything into the ground that will hold.  Wooden stakes and dog stakes won't go in.  Tent pegs will go in if you are lucky, but are inclined to pull out.  Some people have created concrete blocks in buckets, but that doesn't weigh any more than a trolley.

If a finger needs to be pointed anywhere it is at the club as I think they ought to provide a facility for tying the boats down.

I actually think Nobles behaved appropriately.  The boat was tied down, just not to the ground.  The point I was trying to make was I think some other insurers would have quibbled about paying out, but Nobles did the honourable thing and paid out quickly.

The quid pro quo on this is that we have shredded two spinnakers having swapped to the replacement mast, which we eventually traced to exposed wire on the hard eye at the bottom of the forestay.  No attempt at making a claim, as I had no intention to take the p*ss out of Nobles on something I would have felt was dodgy grounds for a claim.

It seems inevitable to me that an insurance company that pays out for lots of mast and boats not tied down properly, without much of a quibble, is going to have to charge higher premiums than one that investigates whether the claim is fair.

I have always found Nobles sorted out claims quickly and very fairly.

Our boat blew over in the dinghy park this year having been tied down to the trolley.  Other insurers may have quibbled about it not being staked to the ground (almost impossible because of the compressed hard core just under the grass), but Nobles settled very promptly.

I would need some persuading to look elsewhere.
