But the Laser sail was always a custom cloth. Don't know if the new one is a custom or off the shelf cloth. I think the expense argument applied to the old one, but as the new one is... well.. new, it's a new development and a different pattern.

The list was just of international classes, Jim? While I'll agree that the oppie is a crazy price, measuring price by size doesn't tell the whole story, really. The most expensive sails are those where development is allowed, along with competition, and people will shell out loads for a percieved edge. Luckily, the Minisail hasn't hit the that problem yet, so my custom sail was £230.

Was never really the cost of a laser sail that was the issue, more the poor value because it lasted such a short time.

At the top level you're getting 2/3 events max out of that 400 quid.  I think if you looked at price per hour the laser sail wouldn't fair so well.

Nope the new rag is RRP cheaper then the current rag I believe and it is a standard cloth now (the 3.8oz cloth was a standard cloth when the sail was last changed).

I'd imagine the burn rate for most top level, equipment intensive sport would offer some parity to this.  I'm not suggesting the sail isn't the Achilles heel in the overall value proposition, but I reckon a top level moth campaign would eat up spares and repairs significantly quicker than amortising a new sail and selling an old off with two weeks use for £200 to the club market.

Absolutely - even more so if you look outside of sailing.   Take a look at the cost of a motorsport campaign!

It's a welcome step if rrp is lower than current, but whether it is 8x or 9x markup doesn't deflect from the fact that it is a simple sail, mass produced and overpriced!

Buy a replica then.... We're fortunate to have options outside of the 'official class bullsh*t' if we choose.

No choice to buy replicas when sailing in national and ranking events.  The replica market proves my point that the official sails are massively over priced.  Likely to be impacting on numbers and participation at higher levels.  We need to encourage participation and affordability.  I agree there is class BS, if enough question matters and understand sails arrive in UK at under £50 then suspect the pressure might be a little different.
