I guess I'll need a plastic hammer.

If I was building a short lived experimental craft I'd consider the fooaming urethane glues, but for all its a pain in the neck to use two pot epoxy it is very tolerant of those of us who are rather less than craftsmen.

I can see straight stems maxing WLL to LOA and I guess I can see how the fine, very deep vertical bows on Cats work, preventing nose diving like the old Tornado and offering some resistance to leeway.

What is the benefit of coming back past vertical, weight saving for max WLL seems possible but minimal to me. Is going through a wave thought to use less energy than lifting the boat and crew weight over? When you go through don't you increase wetted area and displace more water than going over, chucking spray up and around must be wasted energy as well.

Not arguing, just asking.
My presumption is that by tapering the hull upwardly and rounding the top you enable it to emerge easily upwards out of a wave it has ploughed into (the way a normal bow cuts down into a wive instead of lifting the bow, unnecessarily pitching the boat).  The reverse bow simply results from that upward taper of the beam.

There may be more to it than that, but I can't see what.

I thought that for cats, going through waves (and so minimizing rig pitching) is faster than hobby horsing & going over waves. The fact it's a lot wetter doesn't matter, as you're far enough away from the leeward bow.

For mono keelboats, it's a fashion thing. When TPs/IMOCAs etc start showing up with reverse bows, then I might start to believe that it's a faster shape. Until then..

Relevant because they have a closer length to width ratio to a dinghy than a cat does.

I added the reverse bow just as a means to try and understand how to best design one. In reality a vertical bow would be easier to build but would it look as good? I used delftship to design it with the intent of using Catia V5 r21 to complete the detailed design, but haven't got that far yet.

I'd just make detailing recesses in the mouldings so there are less 'edges' to lift.Nice ideas ... but you could just get an NS14 or Icon hull to play with and save lots of ££££ Mike L.

Yes, just a hiker. Could be thought is as a maxed out 200, or a Tasar with a kite, or (unlikely as it sounds) a Merlin mixed with a 29er. It certainly has been influenced by all of those (and more) but, in my head at least, it's more than a merging of ideas. It is all based on first principle theory, personal taste and a habit of being contrary.

As good as the NS and Icon hulls are, I like the process of designing hulls. I may not have the pockets to make 'em, but I like drawing them and the intricate detail it involves. And one day, one day, I hope to have the satisfaction of sailing one such creation, even though it would be far more sensible not to!

This is my winter project. When I say winter I am more talking nuclear winter durations.
