Plastic sails and carbon were earlier than the epoxy hulls. At least 2-3 years, maybe earlier
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Well, here's a first shot at my technology survey page. Some beta testing would be nice. It doesn't gather any personal data at all you'll notice, I thought it would be easier that way. If someone really wanted to corrupt the results somehow they'd just forge that info anyway...
There's a zz-testclass at the end of the list if you want to play with it without sending me real data.

My technology introduction survey

cheers, Jim C

Could do with the ability to highlight other significant changes eg in Merlin's the spinnaker pole length rule was lengthened from 2m Max to 2.3m in 1996 and subsequently the Max area of the spinnaker increased to 10sqm in 2002. Also the introduction of deck stepped, raking rigs in the late 1980s had a significant impact.

An interesting one that. Trying to keep it fairly simple, and make the data processing very simple but that is useful data. I'll see about working something up.

Jim

Can see exactly where you are coming from but while the relatively simple approach may work with one designs such as Solos, in a restricted class eg Merlin Rocket or development class eg Int 14, other factors may also be significant.

Foils getting lighter by the use of carbon fibre eg in Solos may also have an impact together with use of carbon fibre as a building material for the actual boat which can take weight out of the ends of the boat although the measured weight would stay the same through addition of correctors to bring the boat up to class minimum.

You won't find any carbon fibre in Solos folis, not class legal ones anyway.

Sorry confusing the issue. I was misremembering the problem that Solos had a few years ago with moulded foils replacing wooden ones.

Just done the Lightning - the carbon mast is only the top mast, so not sure it will make much difference, though it is probably better than the Needlespar from the 70's and 80's that most of the fleet still have.

The odd thing about the Lightning is that new boats have been built to not outclass the old ones, barring the age issue itself. Some ergonomic changes to the hull is the only thing that can't be transferred to old hulls. Sails have improved since 2010, and a new shape rudder means the boat will actually bear away with a muppet sailing it most of the time. I have a feeling the changes are far smaller in effect than the changes in sailors and weather each year will have. And the rebalance, of course.

Jim, just posted for the Contender but should explain that we have had Mylar sails for 10 yrs and there was some early take up but the fleet is now nearly exclusively Dacron. It just works better with the Contender masts

Thanks for posts so far. I've tuned the page a bit and added a section where class rule changes can be written in.
Suggestions for improvements still welcome before I give it its own topic and maybe publish it elsewhere. This is really a crowdsourcing exercise, so the more the merrier...
