At hill head we tend to do 2 races back to back but our series only tend to be 6-8 races at most (except the short course racing - 4 * 15min races with the fleet crossing lots on the reaches... fun!).

we also have 6 individual weekends of class racing so you can win each weekend or win overall out all the weekends.

We also have lots of one off races which again have a prize for each one or an overall prize as a series. They are split into different types eg, yachts against dinghies, long distance etc

Why any club would want to exclude anyone from their results is completely beyond me. Very odd.

Time - Lord, on the subject of inclusion, any chance you'll be looking at removing your joining fee? I was considering joining but it was a deal breaker at the time.

Joining fee is currently £100 up front with £50 discount off 2nd year's membership - works out as £50 joining fee which is not untypical in the area. Seems to have worked this year but will be up for discussion in next month. Why not PM with what you would like to see?

I'm fairly sure that's the same up the road at Draycote these days too...   I was surprised to see 'qualification' even mentioned today, I thought it went out with Mast Abeam.

Quick question Time Lord- should probably send a private message to you, but I thought Banbury SC had a handicap cut off of 1000 PY, yet you've got Merlin... is that little rule open to discussion for new members?

Ah yes - mast abeam - not six weeks since I last heard it shouted (and not in an ironical way)!

Depending on who has been the sailing sec. we seem to have applied different ideas. As I have been the Sailing sec for about 9 of the last 15yrs, I have never applied a qualification criteria to any of our series. If I did, the winners wouldnt have changed, the only thing is we might have only had to buy a prize for the winner!

Like Jim, we allow people to sail multiple boats, so someone might sail some of the races in their 800 but when its too windy for them to venture out in that they take their Buzz out instead. If we didnt allow it then they simply wouldnt sail and we'd all miss out. I've long argued that Sailwave and PYS ought to be able to take this into account in a better manner than current as its a pain trawling through results that you move from Sailwave to PYS to rename the boat used for a particular race.
As for series length, I have no evidence either way. We have tried small series of 8-10 races (2 races back to back each Sunday) and we have tried 20 race series. Turnouts were not really any different. People tend to turn up when it suits rather than to make a concerted effort at a series. The keen lifers like me tend to turn up every weekend unless there is a really really important event taking place that is deemed more important by the family, but I think in current society dedication to a sport week in week out is not the norm, instead people dip in and out as and when the urge takes them.

same here chris, when we were looking to change clubs three years ago, it was one of the reasons why we didnt join.

which looking back, is a great shame. Cry

on the other hand, banbury would still be the favorite for us to join, if we decided to change clubs in the future. the other possibles being hollowell or rugby and daventry.

I don't like joining fees so I'd say get rid of it, but its not my club so I don't know the ins and outs of how you set up your fee structure or whether you rely on joining fees much. Obviously the current discount helps, but why not just make it a £50 joining fee? Its your club so you can set it at whatever you feel is appropriate, its just that I've always seen a joining fee as not very welcoming, not because I'm tight, well maybe a bit, but because of the image it portrays. Yours added too much to the cost to move clubs when I was looking a while back. From memory, it didn't put it a million miles off Draycote's single membership with two boats for the first year, admittedly yours is cheaper for the subsequent years but as I was looking when times were tough and Draycote introduced the direct debit monthly payments I stayed put.

Oh and my boat has just dipped below the 1000 limit but isn't as low as a Merlin, so like James, not sure if i'd be allowed to join now anyway, but while I enjoy racing on the big open water, a part of me likes the idea of returning to a smaller club where everyone mucks in so maybe one day. It would be a return to the old days Duncan!

Apologies for the thread hijack...
