wouldnt be suprised if an mx ray was exceptionally fast for its PY downwind in heavy winds. upwind, it is terrible, but the manufacturer claimed something stupid like 23mph downwind...

That's possibly right, measured over about 50ft, as you jump off one wave and hit the next.
A fair component of that velocity may be downwards.

Sounds fun to me!

As it's PY is presumably based almost entirely on displacement performance, if you could get an oppie to plane would that not be a potential winner?

Applies almost universally, foiling toppers, foiling l*sers, foiling wineglass... Ok , foiling Wayfarer, frankly I'd like to see just how massive the lift wings would need to be..... Would we be talking AC or A380?

Oppies plane really well, and I'd agree that they would be a good bet for getting a good top speed compared to handicap, especially with a squaddy on board, pushing hard, parents shouting instructions from the shore...

Sorry, that last bit just sort of happened, out of habit...

for what it's worth my best max speed in the 200 is about 15-16 knots. However, over 1 km it's only 12.9. When it's choppy it feels super fast but is actually quite slow. The fastest is on flatter water.

Interestingly, the 800 recorded 19.5 knots, then did 16.7 knots over 1 km.

All on garmin forerunner. It's reasonably accurate, but the max speeds can be a bit spurious. Over 1 km it evens out pretty well.

How do those compare when you run then on PY?

800 max 19.5/1000*820 = 16.0
200 max 16/1000*1053 = 16.9

800 1k 16.7/1000*820 = 13.7
200 1k 12.9/1000*1053 = 13.6

Interesting numbers Mozzy, I'm going to sort out where to put the GPS on the 400.
I don't have one with a peak speed feature, so I need to be able to read it while sailing.
Not that my numbers will be the max achievable as we don't go out in silly wind like the younger hooligan element any more.
I think having a GPS aboard while sailing against the tide could be quite depressing in light air.
